Bowman, Suarez Lead WPU Past Red Hawks, 14-9

Little Falls, NJ (4/21/03) - Dan Suarez (Jersey City, NJ/St. Mary's) had three RBI and Charlie Bowman (Suffern, NY/Don Bosco Prep) earned his third win of the season as the Pioneers of William Paterson defeated Montclair State 14-9 in New Jersey Athletic Conference action Monday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium.

Suarez finished 3-for-6 with two runs scored for the Pioneers (15-9, 6-4), winners of four straight. ETHAN BOYD (Perth Amboy, NJ/Perth Amboy) was 3-for-5 with an RBI for the Red Hawks (12-15-1, 7-7) who have lost three in a row.

William Paterson entered the top of the sixth trailing 4-3 before exploding for six runs to take a 9-4 advantage. Pinch-hitter Pete Zaccheria (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) tied the game with a sacrifice fly scoring Jack Baker (Jersey City, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) who reached on a lead-off single. Ron Hayward (Hoboken, NJ/Marist), who had his 16 game hitting streak halted today, then drew a bases-loaded walk to score the go-ahead run. WPU would then tack on four more insurance runs in the inning, two off a single by Suarez .

Bowman tossed six innings as he improved to 3-2 on the season. He allowed four runs and 10 hits while striking out seven and walking three. Jake Pravkewitz (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) picked up his third save of the year in three innings of work. JUSTIN LORENTZEN (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) suffered the loss in relief. Lorentzen (1-3) threw 2 1/3 innings giving up five runs and four hits.

Offensively for the Pioneers, Tim Banos (Edison, NJ/Edison), Bryan Graham (Medford, NJ/Lenape Regional), and Zaccheria each had two RBI. For the Red Hawks, BRIAN SHEEKEY (Palm Coast, FL/Father Lopez), BRIAN BUTLER (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo Regional) and DANNY RODRIGUEZ (South Brunswick, NJ/S. Brunswick) each contributed with two RBI apiece.
