Red Hawks Down Rutgers-Newark Twice

Little Falls, NJ - ETHAN BOYD (Perth Amboy, NJ/Perth Amboy) drove in three and ALEX THOMPSON (Whippany, NJ/Whippany) allowed just one hit in seven innings of work in the nightcap as Montclair State swept Rutgers-Newark in their regular season conference finale 6-3 and 5-0 Sunday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium.

Tom Csigi (Rochelle Park, NJ/Hackensack) had two hits for the Scarlet Raiders (12-18-1, 5-11 NJAC) who recorded just eight hits this afternoon. MIKE WEISS (Mt Laurel, NJ/Lenape Regional) finished 3-for-6 with three runs scored for the Red Hawks (14-16-1, 10-8 NJAC).

Rutgers-Newark recorded all their runs in a fifth inning rally in game one. The Scarlet Raiders entered the top of the fifth trailing 2-0 before plating three runs to take their only lead of the day. Joel Burgos (Landing, NJ/Roxbury) led off the inning with a single, breaking up the no-hitter. Mike Marcucci (Whitehouse Station, NJ/Immaculata) and Brian Trapani (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) each recorded RBI doubles while Csigi singled home one for Rutgers-Newark's only runs of the afternoon.

Montclair then rallied for three runs in their half of the sixth. With two outs, DANNY RODRIGUEZ (South Brunswick, NJ/S. Brunswick) singled home the tying run, followed by a two RBI single from Boyd for a 5-3 Red Hawk advantage.

The Red Hawks then cruised to a 5-0 victory in game two, their first shutout of the 2003 season. Thompson (2-3) led the way tossing seven plus innings allowing just one hit, while fanning seven and walking four. JUSTIN LORENTZEN (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) then closed out the game also allowing just one hit.

Montclair's offense was led by MATT BENEDETTI (Summit, NJ/Summit) who smashed his third homerun of the season, a two run pinch hit shot to right-centerfield.
