Kings Point, NY (12/11/04) - The Montclair State swimming and diving teams split their dual meet with the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday afternoon. The MSU women's team posted a 124-99 victory over the Mariners while the men fell, 128-106.
The victory lifted the Red Hawk women to 4-5 on the season while the men's squad dropped back to the .500 mark at 4-4.
On the women's side, Montclair won seven events, including the very first one - the 400 medley relay - as the quartet of
LINDSEY NEWMAN,
RACHEL YANNUZZI,
JESSICA GUTH and
ADRIENNE RICHARDI posted a time of 4:30.32. Tracey Keelan and Carly Orpurt led a 1-2 finish in the 1000 freestyle with times of 12:31.82 and 12:43.65, respectively. Likewise, Richardi (2:09.24) and Newman (2:10.63) placed the same in the 200 freestyle with freshman
KRISTINE BATES and
DIANA GIL taking the top two spots in the 50 freestyle at 26.43 and 27.01, respectively.
Guth finished first in the 200 fly (2:.32.52) with Keelan timing in second (2:38.52) and the Red Hawks swept the top three spots in the 100 free - Gil (58.55), Bates (59.01) and
KATIE EACHES (1:03.26). Newman capped off the MSU first-place finishes with a victory in the 200 backstroke 2:24.50 with Richardi coming in second at 2:27.11.
For the Red Hawk men diver
ERIC LOREE won both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. Loree took the 1-meter event with a score of 196.20 and the captured the 3-meter with a score of 198.52. MSU also went 1-2 in the 400 freestyle relay as the quartet of
SHANE SCHWARZ,
SCOTT MONTGOMERY,
RODOLFO MORRELL and
AHMED ABDELAAL posted a time of 3:39.05. Ryan Gorksy,
CHRIS PETRILLO,
MARK JAMIESON and
BRIAN PLATT came in right behind at 3:53.58.
Montclair State will now be off until early January as the Red Hawks travel to San Juan Puerto Rico for their annual training trip. Unlike past seasons, Montclair will also be in competitive action as well as the women will face Division II East Stroudsburg while the men face Bates College on Monday, January 3.
