Salisbury, MD - Randy Re scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh as pre-season ranked #1 Eastern Connecticut handed Montclair State a 5-1 loss in the Red Hawks' season opener on Sunday morning.
Montclair State (0-1) and Eastern Connecticut (1-1) were forced to suspend the game in the bottom of the seventh inning with no outs and one runner aboard on Saturday afternoon after a storm passed through the Salisbury area. The Red Hawks and Warriors resumed the game Sunday morning at 9am.
Re reached base on a walk after teammate Marc Garofalo tied the game at one with a solo shot to left field to lead off the inning. Re then advanced to third after a two base error on a failed pickoff attempt. Rightfielder Jason Pekrul then tripled into the right-centerfield gap to plate Re for the go-ahead run. The Warriors tacked on three more insurance runs, two in the seventh inning as Matt Cooney singled across a run and shortstop Tom Koch executed the squeeze bunt. Greg Sullivan rounded out the scoring with a RBI single in the bottom of the eighth.
The Red Hawks jumped on the board first in the top of the second inning for their only lead of the game. First baseman
TOMMY WARTH (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) led off the inning with double into the right-centerfield gap. After a successful sacrifice by senior PJ Baccarella (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne), designated hitter
MATT BENEDETTI (Summit, NJ/Summit) grounded out to score MSU's only run.
