Wilmington, DE - Senior catcher
PAUL SAMMARCO had two hits and three RBI while
ED KLOEPPING belted his second homer of the season as Montclair State knocked off Wilmington (DE), 10-6, in NCAA Baseball action on Saturday afternoon.
Righthander
JAIRO MENDEZ picked up his second win of the season as the Red Hawks moved within a game of .500 at 4-5 on the season. The game was a makeup of Wednesday's snowed out contest which was to be held at Yogi Berra Stadium.
Montclair State fell behind 1-0 after one inning, but scored four times in the second to take the lead for good.
MATT BENEDETTI and
BRIAN BUTLER walked to open the inning and then executed a double steal. Sammarco then wrapped a run-scoring single to tie the game. Sammarco then stole second and an errant throw allowed Butler to score for a 2-1lead.
MIKE HALLIGAN and
ETHAN BOYD each added RBI singles for a 4-1 MSU lead.
After Wilmington got a run back in the fourth, MSU added two in the fifth as Sammarco line a double down the left field line to make the score,5-2 and Boyd's RBI ground out gave Montclair a four-run cushion.
The Red Hawks extended the lead to 9-2 in the seventh as Kloepping smacked a pinch-hit round-tripper over the right-centerfield fence.
LOU POLITAN would come around to score on an error for the other Montclair run.
Wilmington would get within 9-6 in the bottom of the seventh and loaded the bases with one out, however, Reliever
JAY COOK got the final two outs to keep the lead intact. MSU's final run in the ninth came on a Halligan fielder's choice.
Mendez picked up the win as he went 5 1/3 innings allowing four hits and two runs (one earned). He struck out four and walked one. Halligan was 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored while Sammarco went 2-for-3at the plate.
The Red Hawks return to action on Tuesday, March 29 as they travel to York College (PA) to face the Spartans at 3:30 pm.
