Red Hawks Split with Rutgers-Camden

Little Falls, NJ - Montclair State righthander JAY COOK tossed a complete game in the opener while Rutgers-Camden righthander Matt Novella provided 6 2/3 innings of solid relief in the second game as the Red Hawks and Scarlet Raptors split a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader at Yogi Berra Stadium on Sunday afternoon. MSU (8-10, 3-4 NJAC) took the opener 6-2 with Rutgers-Camden (16-5, 3-3 NJAC) earning the split with a 7-3 win in the second game.

Cook(2-0) tossed his first career complete game as he limited the Scarlet Raptors to just five hits and one earned run. He struck out six and walked two. Rutgers-Camden jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first as Matt Calloway reached on an error and came around to score on Ed McDonnell's RBI double to left-center field. However,Montclair State would take the lead with five runs in the fourth. ED KLOEPPING had an RBI single and TOMMY WARTH had hisg round ball mishandled allowing two more runs to score as the Red Hawks took a 3-1 lead. Kloepping would score on a wild pitch and MATT HARTWICK lofted sacrifice fly to account for the final MSU run. Camden would get a run back in the seventh as Joe Midili brought home a run with a single,but MSU answered in the bottom of the inning as ETHAN BOYD delivered a run-scoring single.

Derek Heritage took the loss. Heritage allowed seven hits and six runs in 6 2/3 innings with three strikeouts and one walk. Tyler Inkster had two hits for Rutgers-Camden while Boyd finished 3-for-4 for Montclair State.

In the second game, the Scarlet Raptors jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first as they strung together five straight hits. Dean Straga collected a one-out base hit and Calloway followed with a single to left and went to second on the throw to third.McDonnell then drove a hit through the middle scoring Straga and Calloway for a 2-0 lead. After a Dustin Roach infield single Mike Morris brought home McDonnell with a base hit for the final Raptor run.

Montclair State would get a run back in the first on an RBI hit by BRIAN BUTLER and closed within 3-2 as KEVIN CUOZZI added an RBI ground out in the seventh. But Rutgers-Camden would quickly push the lead back to four in the eighth with three runs. Calloway had a sacrifice fly and McDonnell collected his third RBI with a base hit. Roach brought the final run home on a sacrifice fly. Straga had an RBI single in the ninth and Novella pitched out of some minor trouble in the ninth allowing just one run after the Red Hawks loaded the bases to start the inning.

Novella(3-1) allowed eight hits and two runs, striking out three and walking two. JUSTIN LORENTZEN took the loss. Lorentzen (0-2) allowed five hits and three runs.

Brian Jakubowski and Straga each had three hits for Rutgers-Camden, while DANNY RODRIGUEZ went 3-for-5for Montclair State.

Montclair State now goes on the road for its next 10 games. The Red Hawks begin the trek away from Yogi Berra Stadium on Tuesday, April 12as they travel to DeSales University for a 3:30 pm start. MSU returns home on Monday, April 25 as they host Cortland at 3:30 pm.
