Red Hawks Nightcap Victory Earns Split at Rowan

Glassboro, NJ – Senior centerfielder ETHAN BOYD drove in three runs and freshman KEVIN CUOZZI  was 3-for-6 with two RBI as Montclair State defeated Rowan University, 9-6 in the nightcap to earn a split of their NJAC doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. Rowan won the first game, 8-4.

In the first game, left hander Josh Schwartz went 7.2 innings for his ninth victory and 33 rd straight win. He struck out 11 and gave up four earned runs. Designated hitter/pitcher Brian McLaughlin recorded three RBIs with two hits (four at bats) and one run scored. Right fielder Frank Hasenauer contributed with two hits and two RBIs. Catcher Michael Rucci added two hits and a RBI.

For MSU, right fielder MICHAEL NUNES went three for four (a triple) with three RBIs. First baseman TOMMY WARTH had two hits while center fielder ETHAN BOYD scored two runs. JAIRO MENDEZ took the loss on the mound. Mendez gave up seven runs, six were earned, and he had four strikeouts.

Rowan got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first. Rucci had a RBI single that scored second baseman Frank Galeota. The Profs went up 3-0 after two runs in the third. McLaughlin singled in both of the runs. MSU came back with one run in the fourth and fifth innings. Nunes had a RBI single in the fourth while catcher MATT HARTWICK scored on a wild pitch in the fifth. The Profs answered with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. McLaughlin singled in the first run and third baseman Jesse Pappler doubled in the second. The third run scored on a ground out by left fielder Jim Comprelli and Hasenauer had a RBI single.

The Profs' final run came in the seventh when Hasenauer had a RBI single. The Red Hawks had two runs in the top of the eighth. Nunes tripled down the right field line that scored both of the runs.

With the win in the second game, MSU ended Rowan's win streak of 31 straight home games. Rowan is 32-3 overall and 9-3 in the conference. Montclair State has an overall record of 11-17 and a 5-9 conference mark.

ALEX THOMPSON earned the win on the mound in relief. Thompson (1-2) pitched 2.2 innings and only gave up two hits. Boyd went two for five at the plate with three RBIs. Cuozzi had three hits (six at bats), a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Designated hitter ED KLOEPPING totaled two hits and two RBIs. Second baseman MARC DECASTRO and Warth each had two hits and a RBI.

Galeota went three for four with one RBI and one run scored. Pappler had two hits (five at bats), one RBI and one run scored. Rucci and Comprelli each contributed with a RBI.

MSU jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning. Body and Warth each singled in a run while Kloepping doubled in two runs. Cuozzi had a hit to center field that scored two runs. Rowan came back with four runs in the bottom of the second. Comprelli had a bunt single for the first run and McLaughlin scored on an error. Galeota and Rucci both had a RBI single. The Red Hawks added to their lead with two runs in the fifth and one in the seventh. In the fifth, DeCastro singled in a run and DeCastro came home on an error. Boyd had a RBI single in the seventh. Rowan rallied for two runs in the ninth.

With no outs, the Profs had the bases loaded. The Red Hawks turned a double play and right fielder Bryan Ciconte scored. Pappler singled to left field that brought home the Profs' final run that was scored by Rucci.
