Montclair Outlasted in Slugfest by Redlands, 21-11

Redlands, CA – The Montclair State baseball team collected 17 hits and scored 11 runs, however, the Red Hawks were outslugged by University of Redlands in a 21-11 loss on Tuesday. MICHAEL NUNES was 3-for-6 with three RBI for Montclair State (2-3), which fell to 0-3 on its West Coast trip.

The Red Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the first as Nunes reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and came around to score on a single by BRIAN BUTLER. Redlands however, would respond with four runs in the second and extended the lead 10-1 as they added two runs in the third and four in the fourth.

Montclair State would cut into the deficit in the sixth inning with five runs. SCOTT EVANGELIST and Nunes singled to opening the inning and Evangelist moved to third on a passed ball. ANDREW VICARO reached on an error to load the bases before Evangelist scored on a wild pitch to make the score, 10-2. ROB BOWNESS then singled to centerfield to drive in two runs to bring MSU within six. After reloading the bases, DANNY RODRIGUEZ was hit by a pitch to force in a run and THOMAS MEYER drew a bases loaded walk for the final run.

Redlands then answered back in its half of the inning with five runs to put the game away. The Bulldogs scored six times in the eighth.

Nunes singled in two runs in the eighth and later added another RBI hit in the ninth while Rodriguez and Meyer each drove in a run for the final MSU scores.

Rodriguez, Meyer, LOU POLITAN and JAMES SCELZO each had two hits for Montclair State.

The Red Hawks return to action on Wednesday, March 15 when they travel to Thousand Oaks, CA to face California Lutheran.
