Cortland Pitching Shuts Down Montclair State

Little Falls, NJ  – Sophomore catcher Mike Zaccardo drove in three runs while Will Groff went 3-for-5 as second-ranked SUNY Cortland knocked off Montclair State, 7-1, in NCAA Division III Baseball action at Yogi Berra Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore lefthander Chris Bilyk  struck out six in three innings of relief work as the Red Dragons won their sixth straight and improved to 11-3 on the season. Bilyk was one of six Cortland pitchers used as it held Montclair State to just four hits in the game.

Junior catcher ANDREW VICARO  drove in the lone run for the Red Hawks, who fell to 4-6-2

Cortland struck for a pair of runs in the first aided by a two-out MSU error. Andrew Mead  drew a two-out walk and stole second. Travis Robinson  then grounded to first base for what should have ended the inning, however, the throw was mishandled allowing Mead to score with the game's first run. Robinson would steal second and come around to score as Jim Basnight  stroked a single to center.

Montclair would get a run back in the fourth. BRIAN BUTLER reached on an error with two out. Vicaro then laced a double to left to drive home Butler brining the Red Hawks within 2-1. However, Cortland would answer in the top of the fourth with two runs as Zaccardo smacked a two-run single.

MSU would get an opportunity to cut back the deficit in the fifth as ROB BOWNESS  walked and Butler singled with one out. Vicaro walked to load the bases, but Montclair could not capitalize on the situation as Bilyk came in and struck out the next two hitters ending the threat.

Cortland then put the game out of reach with single runs in the sxith, seventh and eighth innings. Zaccardo had a RBI double in the sixth and Robinson scored on a wild pitch in the seventh for a 6-1 Red Dragon lead. Mead accounted for the final Cortland run in the eighth with a sacrifice fly.

Bilyk (2-1) picked up the victory as he allowed only one hit in his stint. Jon Rockfeld started and went the first 4 1/3 innings surrendering three hits and one unearned run, fanning three and walking five. Nick McPartland closed out the game in the ninth as he struck out the side in order.

MICHAEL VICARO  took the loss for the Red Hawks. MICHAEL VICARO (0-2) allowed six hits and four runs in 3 1/3 innings. He struck out three and walked three.

Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday as they travel to York College (PA) for a 3:00 pm matchup with the Spartans.
