DeCastro, Cuozzi Help Montclair Past DeSales, 7-3

Little Falls, NJ – Sophomore shortstop KEVIN CUOZZI  drove in a pair of runs and senior second baseman MARC DECASTRO  had three hits and an RBI as Montclair State won its second straight with a 7-3 victory over DeSales University at Yogi Berra Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

ROBERT CLARK had three hits and senior righthander JAY COOK  pitched six solid innings as the Red Hawks ( 12-9-2 ) won for the third time in their last four games.

Scott Metejicka  drove in a pair of runs for the Bulldogs, who fell to 12-10 this season.

DeSales jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first Andrew Heard singled to left field and came around to score as Matejicka hit a double that one-hopped the left field wall. Luke Pisker  singled to put runners at the corners and Matejicka scored when the throw attempt on a steal by Pisker bounced into centerfield.

Montclair State got a run back in the third. Clark, who finished 3-for-5, doubled to left with one out and moved to third on a ground out. BRIAN BUTLER  then bounced a single up the middle cutting the MSU deficit to 2-1. The Red Hawks took the lead the following inning scoring three times. After the first out, SCOTT EVANGELIST  and MICHAEL NUNES each walked before DeCastro lined a base hit to left center scoring Evangelist, knotting the game at 2-2. With runners at second and third, MSU attempted a squeeze that was bunted in the air. The ball was misplayed allowing the runner to reach first, however, Nunes and DeCastro were caught off base. Nunes made it back to third successfully and DeCastro was hung up in a run down. The Bulldogs got DeCastro off second, but Nunes managed to race home with the go-ahead run.

The Red Hawks would add three more in the sixth. Nunes walked with one out and DeCastro, who was 3-for-4, singled to put runners at the corners. DeCastro would steal second and the two came home on Cuozzi's double down the left-field line. Cuozzi would steal third and came home on a throwing error as MSU took a 6-2 lead. Evangelist accounted for the final run in the seventh with an RBI single past the draw-in infield.

DeSales got their third run in the eight on a sacrifice fly by Matejicka.

Cook improved to 3-0 as he allowed five hits and two runs (one earned) in his six-inning stint, striking out three and walking none. James Niesuchouski  took the loss. Niesuchouski (2-1) went four innings allowing three runs and four hits. He struck out five and issued three walks.
