Swimming and Diving Splits With Misericordia

Montclair, NJ (1/19/10) – Freshman MICHAEL SMITH (Cherry Hill, NJ / Cherry Hill East) won two individual events and added a third in a relay while junior LAURA SPADONI (Nazareth, PA / Nazareth Area) swept both breaststroke events as Montclair State returned to dual meet action for the first time in 42 days, gaining a split of its dual meet with Misericordia University at the Panzer Athletic Center Pool on Tuesday.

The MSU men posted a 145-117 victory over the Cougars while the women's team fell 140.5-121.5. Both teams are now 3-4 on the season.

Smith took first place in both freestyle distance races as he led a 1-2 finish by MSU in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 11:06.52 touching in ahead of Dan Gordon (Northfield, NJ / Mainland Regional), who timed in a 11:09.25. He would add his second individual victory in the 500 freestyle (5:10.20) before swimming the leadoff leg for the winning 400 freestyle relay team that recorded a time of 3:20.60. Joining Smith was THOMAS LONG (Morristown, NJ / Morristown), ZAK WESTERBERG (Hamilton, NJ / Hamilton North) and BLAISE LACCA (Sewell, NJ / Washington Township).

Lacca and Westerbeg each added individual wins of their own in the 50 and 200 freestyle, respectively. Lacca posted a time of 22.88 to win his event while Westerberg registered a time of 1:49.07 to capture the 200 free.

Sean Chambrovich (Allenhurst, NJ / Red Bank Regional) and CHRIS LEE (Morris Plains, NJ / Parsippany Hills) both had individual victories. Chambrovich took top honors in the 200 backstroke (2:07.88) with Lee finishing first in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.30). The two then combined with SEAN FRENCH (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) and NIKOLAS LUMKONG (Andover, NJ / Pope John XXIII) as the quartet won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:43.51.

Spadoni topped all competitors to win the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. She swam a 1:11.31 to win the 100 events and the posted a time of 2:36.68 to give her the sweep of the breaststroke. Freshman ASHLEY VALLONE (Park Ridge, NJ / Park Ridge)  was a winner in the 50 freestyle (26.21) while also placing second in he 100 butterfly (1:04.07).

JESSICA PATALANO (Edison, NJ / Bishop Ahr) led a 1-2-3 finish for MSU in the 1000 freestyle. Patalano posted a time of 11:53.70. GALINA LOUTCHOUK (Richboro, PA / Council Rock) and ALICE SROGA (Mahwah, NJ / Mahwah) were second and third with times of 12:02.69 and 1:210.24, respectively.

Montclair dives right back into action on Wednesday, January 20 as the Red Hawks host New Jersey Institute of Technology at the Panzer Athletic Center Pool beginning at 6:00 pm.
