Montclair, NJ – Senior
Michael Smith (Cherry Hill, NJ, Cherry Hill East) was a double-winner for Montclair State as the Red Hawks swimming and diving teams opened their 2013-14 campaigns against Seton Hall University on Wednesday evening.
The MSU men fell to the Pirates 153-116 while the women lost 160-116.
Smith won the 200 and 500 freestyle races with times of 1:46.18 and 4:55.98, respectively to highlight the opening meet for MSU.
Nick Kalafatis (Cranford, NJ, Cranford) was a winner in the 1000 freestyle at 10:24.53 and later swam a time of 55.62 in the 100 butterfly.
Dan Knepple (Oxford, CT, Oxford) placed second in the 200 breaststroke with
Nicandro Donadio (Mountainside, NJ, Governor Livingston) coming in right behind at 2:26.41. Knepple also swam a time of 2:10.19 in the 200 individual medley.
On the women's side,
Katherine LaCava (Milltown, NJ, Mount St. Mary's), the 2013 NJAC Rookie of the Year, opened her second season with MSU winning the 200 butterfl;y in a time of 2:15.90.
Sydney Stein (Reistertown, MD, Owings Mills) was second in the 1000 freestyle in a time of 11:22.14 with
Julie Hansen (Berkeley Heights, NJ, Governor Livingston) recording a time of 5:37.09 in the 500 freestyle.
The Red Hawks will host their annual Alumni Homecoming Meet on Saturday, October 12 at Noon before returning to competitive action on Friday, October 25 at home against The College of New Jersey at 5:00 pm.
