Meet Results
Montclair, NJ – Returning to action for the first time in three weeks, the Montclair State men's and women's swimming and diving teams kept the respective winning streaks intact as the Red Hawks swept Misericordia University at the Panzer Pool on Saturday.
The men's team won its fourth straight improving to 4-2 on the season with a 152-108 victory while the women (3-2) posted its third in a row topping the Cougars 152-106.
Freshman
Nick Kalafatis (Cranford, NJ, Cranford) won three individual events for the men. He began his day with a win in the 1000 freestyle clocking in at 10:39.73. He would later add a win in the 200 butterfly (2:03.29) and made it a sweep of the stroke taking the 100 event in a time of 55.60 seconds.
Michael Smith (Cherry Hill, NJ, Cherry Hill East) and
Joseph Berry (Edison, NJ, Edison) each won pair of events. Smith led a 1-2-3 MSU finish in the 200 freestyle winning with a time of 1:48.28.
Brendon Burkett (Egg Harbor Township, NJ, Egg Harbor) and
Brett Quentz (Newton, NJ, Newton) finished second and third respectively, with times of 1:52.04 and 1:52.21. Smith later won the 500 freestyle in a time of 5:06.31. Berry was a winner in the 100 backstroke edging out
Brian Ubhaus (Jefferson Township, NJ, Jefferson) by .22 seconds as he timed in at 56.08 seconds. Berry later won the 200 individual medley (2:04.25) and finished second to Ubhaus in the 200 backstroke. Ubhaus won the event with a time of 2:03.91 with Berry coming in at 2:05.29.
Smith, Kalafatis, Burkett and Berry then combined to win the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 3:21.47.
For the MSU women, sophomore
Sydney Stein (Reistertown, MD, Owings Mills) led a sweep in the 1000 freestyle as she won the event with a time of 11:59.34 with
Kelsie Donahue (Egg Harbor, NJ, Egg Harbor Township) coming in second at 12:14.31 and
Catherine O'Kane (Middletown, NJ, Middletown South) third in a time of 12:35.12.
Julie Hansen (Berkeley Heights, NJ, Governor Livingston) won the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:03.61 with
Alyson Gawin (Cochranville, PA, Octorara Area) taking top honors in 100 backstroke at 1:05.75.
Katherine LaCava (Milltown, NJ, Mount St. Mary's) captured the 200 butterfly (2:19.42) and
Tori Holtzberg (Ridgewood, NJ, Ridgewood) came in first in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:19.67. Stein added a second win in the 500 freestyle posting a time of 5:27.62.
Gabriella Bosa (Freehold, NJ, Freehold Township), Gawin,
Jessica Joseph (Brick, NJ, Brick Township) and Hansen teamed up to win the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 3:51.68.
The Red Hawks are now off until Friday, December 13 when it faces Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponents St. Peter's and Manhattan College in Riverdale, NY at 6:30 pm.
