Port Charlotte, FL – Despite a five-RBI effort from senior second baseman
Lou Martini (Flemington, NJ, North Hunterdon), the Montclair State baseball team had its two-game winning streak snapped as the Red Hawks lost to Salem State 17-7 in the Snowbird Classic on Wednesday.
Catcher
Jayson Stolz (Iselin, NJ, John F. Kennedy) went 4-for-5 and scored a pair of runs as MSU fell to 3-4 overall, 2-2 on their Florida trip.
The Vikings (3-5) jumped all over Montclair State scoring four times in the bottom of the first inning and adding another four in the second and two in the third inning for a 10-0 lead.
The Red Hawks finally got on the board in the top of the fourth when Martini cleared the bases with a double that scored Stolz,
Mike Tolerico (Wayne, NJ, Wayne Valley) and
Ryan Long (Washington Township, NJ, Washington Township). Salem State would get two runs in its half of the fourth before Montclair State countered with three runs in the fifth on an RBI single by
Juan Perdomo Jr. (South Brunswick, NJ, South Brunswick) and a two-run single by Martini cutting the deficit to 12-6.
But Salem State put the game away with five runs in the sixth for a 17-6 lead.
Perdomo had three hits while Tolerico added two for MSU, which collected 16 hits in the contest.
Connor Lindsay (New Egypt, NJ, New Egypt) suffered the loss.
Montclair State returns to action on Thursday, March 14 as it faces No. 12 Marietta College for the second time this week at 11:00 am. MSU defeated the Pioneers 5-4 on Monday with Perdomo driving in the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
