Baseball Picks Up First Win as Montclair State Beats Mary Washington University, 5-2

Macchia Four Scoreless Innings, Ryan Long Three Hits

Fredericksburg, VA – Freshman lefthander Michael Macchia (Middletown, NJ, Middletown North) tossed four scoreless innings while sophomore first baseman Sean Thomas drove in a pair runs with a double as Montclair State picked up its first win of the season knocking off Mary Washington, 5-2 on Sunday.

Freshman rightfielder Matt Long (Washingtin Township, NJ, Washington Township) had three hits and an RBI for the Red Hawks (1-2).

Long, who went 3-for-5 at the plate, set up Montclair State's first run in the top of the first inning as he led off the game with a double to center. Lou Martini (Flemington, NJ, North Hunterdon) sacrificed him over to third and Long scored when Nicholas Martins (Linden, NJ, Linden) collected a base hit to right field for the early 1-0 lead.

The run proved to be all the support Macchia (1-0) would need as he allowed three hits and struck out two in his first outing of the season. Freshman righthander Donald Cusick (Wayne, NJ, Wayne Valley) pitched a scoreless fifth inning before the Red Hawks broke the game open in the top of the sixth inning with four runs.

Christopher Reynolds (Randolph, NJ, Randolph) led off with a base hit and went to second on an error. Anderson Rosa (Perth Amboy, NJ, Perth Amboy) followed with a walk and both runners moved up on wild pitches before Cody Pace (Milltown, NJ, Spotswood) was hit by a pitch loading the bases. Reynolds would walk home with the second run on a free pass issued to Philip Scott (Paulsboro, NJ, Paulsboro) with Thomas delivering the big hit, a double to right center scoring Rosa and Pace for a 4-0 advantage. Long plated Scott for the final run on an RBI ground out.

The Eagles cut the deficit back to 5-2 in the eighth inning and had the tying run at the plate however reliever John Silvestri (Livingston, NJ, Seton Hall Prep), who earned a save in the game, recorded the final out for what turned out to be the final full inning of play.

Montclair State had the bases loaded in the top of the ninth when heavy rains forced the remainder of the game to be canceled.
Martins had two hits for the Red Hawks, who registered 10 in the game.

MSU is now off until Saturday, March 8 when it heads to Port Charlotte, FL for the Snowbird Classic. The Red Hawks will face The College of Wooster at 6:30 pm for the first of two meetings in Montclair's seven-game schedule.
