Baseball's Seven-Run Second Inning Sends Red Hawks Past SUNY Oneonta, 10-1

Reynolds Drives in Three, Torregroza Solid on the Mound

Union, NJ – Junior first baseman Christopher Reynolds (Randolph, NJ, Randolph) drove in three runs while junior catcher Anderson Rosa (Perth Amboy, NJ, Perth Amboy) belted a two-run home run as Montclair State erupted for seven runs in the second inning en route to a 10-1 win over SUNY Oneonta at Kean University's Jim Hynes Stadium on Saturday.

Junior lefthander Jonathan Torregroza (Bound Brook, NJ, Immaculata) pitched six solid innings striking out six batters as the Red Hawks (4-6) snapped a three-game losing streak in their first game in the northern region this season. MSU had played three games in Virginia in the first week in March and then had six games at the Snowbird Classic in Florida. Saturday's contest was originally slated for MSU's Yogi Berra Stadium but was switched to Union due to field conditions.

Both teams will square off again at Jim Hynes Stadium on Sunday, March 23 at Noon.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning Montclair State sent 10 batters to the plate taking advantage of four walks mixed in with some timely hitting. Reynolds began the rally with leadoff double and scored one out later as Nicholas Martins (Linden, NJ, Linden) lofted a single into right-centerfield tying the game at 1-1. Rosa put MSU in front 3-1 with a towering home run to left field, his first of the year.

Consecutive walks to Mike Tolerico (Wayne, NJ, Wayne Valley), Connor Abreu (Piscataway, NJ, Piscataway) and Ryan Long (Washington Township, NJ, Washington Township) loaded the bases and after a pitching change, Lou Martini (Flemington, NJ, North Hunterdon) drew a free pass bringing home another run for a 4-1 lead. Senior shortstop Cody Pace (Milltown, NJ, Spotswood) delivered Abreu with a sacrifice fly and Reynolds' second hit of the inning added two more runs giving MSU a 7-1 advantage.

That turned out to be more than enough for Torregroza (1-1), who settled in after allowing a first-inning run. Chris Orlando (Putnam Valley, NY / Putnam Valley) doubled in the Red Dragons' run but after that Torregroza set down 16 of the final 18 hitters he faced giving up only a one-out single to Casey Kies (Apalachi, NY / Vestal) in the third and a leadoff base hit to Jon Halligan (Cornwallville, NY / Cairo Durham) in the fifth

Relievers Taylor Parsons (Livingston, NJ, Livingston), Donald Cusick (Wayne, NJ, Wayne Valley) and Connor Lindsay (New Egypt, NJ, New Egypt) closed out the game with a scoreless inning apiece.

Reynolds, who went 3-for-3 at the plate, added an RBI single in the fourth with Abreu scoring on an error in the fifth extending the MSU lead to 9-1. Sophomore first baseman Sean Thomas (Hillsborough, NJ, Hunterdon Central) accounted for the final run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning.

Long, Pace and Rosa all had two hits for the Red Hawks, who had 13 in the contest.

Joe Franke (Livingston Manor, NY / Liberty Central) took the loss for SUNY Oneonta, which began the day shutting out Kean 8-0.
