Mahwah, NJ – Junior lefthander
Jonathan Torregroza (Bound Brook, NJ, Immaculata) went the distance allowing run as Montclair State turned the tables on Ramapo College beating the Roadrunners 4-1 on Friday to earn a split of its home-and-home series.
Torregroza, who improved to 2-2 with his first complete game of the season, scattered eight hits, struck out three and walked two as he got plenty of help from his defense with 13 ground outs and 10 flyouts in his 105-pitch performance.
Montclair (9-13, 4-4 NJAC), which fell to Ramapo 9-0 at home on Thursday, jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third as the Red Hawks scored twice breaking a string of 20 innings without scoring a run. Freshman
Ryan Long (Washington Township, NJ, Washington Township) led off with a walk and was sacrificed to second.
Lou Martini (Flemington, NJ, North Hunterdon) drew a free pass before
Christopher Reynolds (Randolph, NJ, Randolph) singled to center scoring Long with the game's first run.
Philip Scott (Paulsboro, NJ, Paulsboro) followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Martini as MSU led 2-0.
The Red Hawks added to the lead in the fourth with two more runs.
Jayson Stolz (Iselin, NJ, John F. Kennedy) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and leftfielder
P.J. Jennings (Morris Plains, NJ, Morristown) singled. After both runners moved up on a sacrifice, Long grounded out scoring Stolz and
Connor Abreu (Piscataway, NJ, Piscataway) singled to bring home Jennings for a 4-0 Montclair State advantage.
Ramapo got a run back in the fourth on an RBI single by Jose Garcia with two outs, however that would be all the scoring the Roadrunners (15-8-1, 3-4-1 NJAC) would get against Torregroza, who would retire 15 of the final hitters he faced.
Jennings had two hits for MSU.
Montclair State is back in action on Saturday, April 12 as it hosts Richard Stockton at Yogi Berra Stadium. First pitch of the NJAC doubleheader is slated for 11:30 am.
