Keith Murphy (Point Pleasant, NJ, Point Pleasant Boro) drove in two runs while junior lefty
Jonathan Torregroza (Bound Brook, NJ, Immaculata) tossed the Red Hawks' second straight complete game as Montclair State finished off a sweep of its home-and-home series with The College of New Jersey winning 6-2 at Ackerman Park on Friday afternoon.
MSU moved over the .500 mark for the first time this season as it ran its winning streak to six straight. The Red Hawks 914-13, 8-4 NJAC) six-game winning streak is its longest since capturing eight in a row from March 27 – April 6 in the 2012 campaign.
Torregroza followed up
Michael Macchia's (Middletown, NJ, Middletown North) complete-game effort on Thursday with his second consecutive nine-inning stint. Torregroza (3-2), who went the distance against Ramapo a week ago in a 4-1 victory, scattered 11 hits, struck out one and walked one. Steven Volpe (4-1) took the loss for the Lions (16-12, 5-7 NJAC).
TCNJ took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning as Mike Murray singled home Josh Limon for the game's first run. Limon was hit by a pitch with two outs and advanced to second on a wild pitch before scoring on the single.
Montclair, which left the bases loaded in the first, finally got to Volpe in the sixth.
Christopher Reynolds (Randolph, NJ, Randolph) reached on an error to open the inning and scored as
P.J. Jennings (Morris Plains, NJ, Morristown) doubled to centerfield tying the game at 1-1. Murphy game MSU the lead with a singled down the left field line. The Red Hawks had a chance to increase the lead loading the bases with two outs, however Volpe got fly ball to keep the game at one run.
Torregroza stranded a runner at third in the bottom of the sixth and Montclair gave him some breathing room in the seventh on an RBI single by Murphy that scored
Lou Martini (Flemington, NJ, North Hunterdon). New Jersey would cut the lead back to a run in the bottom of the inning as Pat Roberts singled in a run with two outs making the score 3-2. The Lions had the tying run at third however Torregroza got a pop up to close out the inning.
After a scoreless eighth, Montclair State put the game away in the ninth with three runs. Martini singled and later scored on an error for a 4-2 lead.
Philip Scott (Paulsboro, NJ, Paulsboro) came on a wild pitch and senior shortstop
Cody Pace (Milltown, NJ, Spotswood) plated the final run with an RBI single for the 6-2 advantage.
Torregroza would allow a leadoff single in the ninth, but retired the final three batters to end the game.
Martini, Murphy and Pace all had two hits for the Red Hawks as each team had 11 in the contest.
Montclair returns to action on Saturday, April 19 when it travels to Glassboro, NJ to face Rowan University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader at 11:30 am.
