Baseball Outlasts No. 11 Rowan in Opener 6-3 in 12 Innings, Earns Split of NJAC Doubleheader

Red Hawks Top No. 11 Profs Behind Great Pitching, Timely Hitting

Glassboro, NJ – Montclair State outlasted 11th-ranked Rowan in 12 innings in the opener before seeing its seven-game winning streak snapped with a 4-3 loss in the second game as the Red Hawks and Profs split their NJAC doubleheader on Saturday.

MSU knocked off the Profs 6-3 in the first game and now stands at 15-14 overall, 9-5 in the NJAC. Montclair currently sits in fourth place in the league standings, a game behind Rowan, Kean and Rutgers-Camden with one week remaining in the conference schedule. The Red Hawks play a home-and-home with local rival William Paterson Thursday and Friday, April 24-25 before hosting New Jersey City in a twinbill on Saturday, April 26.

In the opener, Montclair State fell behind 3-0 after three innings, however starter Dylan Papa (South Plainfield, NJ, South Plainfield) and reliever John Silvestri (Livingston, NJ, Seton Hall Prep) shut down the Profs to the tune of four hits over the final nine innings.

Montclair hopped on Rowan starter Ryan Easterday for a run in the fourth as freshman Ryan Long (Washington Township, NJ, Washington Township) led off with a single and went to second as Christopher Reynolds (Randolph, NJ, Randolph) was hit by a pitch. After the second out, P.J. Jennings (Morris Plains, NJ, Morristown) stroked a single through the left side scoring Long as Montclair closed within 3-1.

MSU tied the game in sixth as Long was once again in the middle of things. He led off with a base hit and that was followed by a single back through the middle by Lou Martini (Flemington, NJ, North Hunterdon). Easterday then threw a ball away on a pickoff attempt allowing both runners to move up before Reynolds doubled to left field knotting the score at 3-3.

That's the way the game would stay into extra innings although Rowan did put a runner on third with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. But Papa, who would log 10 innings in the game, got a ground out to end the threat.  The Red Hawks would threaten in both the 10th and 11th innings however the Profs came up with a big defensive play in the eighth to keep MSU off the scoreboard then got out of the 11th as reliever Carlos Ruiz got a pop up with the bases loaded to end the inning.

In the bottom of the 11th, Rowan put the winning run aboard with a leadoff single. Silvestri came out of the pen and got a flyball however an error put runners at first and second with one out. Silvestri then got the pitcher's best friend as Martini snared a line drive and doubled off the runner at second base to close out the inning.

Montclair snapped the tie in the 12th with three runs. Long walked with one out and went to second and third on a pair of wild pitches by Ruiz. Martini then squeezed home Long with the second run and Reynolds' second double of the game sent Martini home for a 5-3 lead. Jennings added an RBI single giving the Red Hawks the three-run cushion.

Silvestri allowed a leadoff walk in the bottom of the inning but fanned the next two batters and got a ground out to end the game. The lefthander improved to 3-2 on the year with the two shutout innings. Papa battled his way through 10 innings as he allowed 12 hits, struck out seven and walked one.

Long was 3-for-5 at the plate as was Reynolds with Martini going 3-for-6. Jennings had two hits for MSU, which collected 13 in the game.

Nicholas Martins (Linden, NJ, Linden) gave Montclair State a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap before Rowan tied the game in the bottom of the inning. Martini stroked a two-run double in the third to put the Red Hawks back in front 3-1 however Rowan would get a run in the fourth and one in the fifth to tie the game at 3-3.

Rich Powelson plated the eventual game-winning run for Rowan in the seventh with a sacrifice fly.

Righthander Louis Pimpinella (Hillsdale, NJ, Pascack Valley) took the loss in relief allowing a run and five hits in four innings of work. He is now 1-1. Freshman righthander Connor Lindsay (New Egypt, NJ, New Egypt) also gave up five hits along with three runs in four innings. Lindsay fanned six and walked one.

Reynolds, Philip Scott (Paulsboro, NJ, Paulsboro) and Cody Pace (Milltown, NJ, Spotswood) had two hits each for Montclair State.

The Red Hawks are back in action on Tuesday, April 22 traveling to York, PA for a 4:00 pm matchup with York College.
