Baseball Races Past York (PA), 11-1 as Red Hawks Win for Eighth Time in Last Nine Games

Stolz, Perdomo 2 RBI Each; Listro Five Solid Innings

Montclair, NJ – Senior catcher Jayson Stolz (Iselin, NJ, John F. Kennedy)and senior designated hitter Juan Perdomo Jr. (South Brunswick, NJ, South Brunswick) each drove in a pair of runs as Montclair State won for the eighth time in its last nine games with an 11-1 victory over York College (PA) at Yogi Berra Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

Freshman outfielder Ryan Long (Washington Township, NJ, Washington Township) went 3-for-4 with an RBI as Montclair upped its record to 16-14 on the season. The Red Hawks also snapped a four-game losing streak against the Spartans (23-8) winning for the first time since 2009, a 9-5 win at home. The teams have split 24 all-time meetings.

Freshman righthander Nick Listro (Swedesboro, NJ, Kingsway) got the start for MSU and pitched five solid innings to pick up his first career victory. Listro (1-1) allowed a run and five hits, striking out one and walking three before giving way to relievers Anthony Altieri (Montville, NJ, Montville), who tossed two scoreless innings, Josh Felix (Elizabeth, NJ, Elizabeth) and John Silvestri (Livingston, NJ, Seton Hall Prep) as the latter two each pitched a clean inning.

After Listro got MSU through the top of the first, the Red Hawks plated two runs in the bottom of the inning to grab the early lead. Connor Abreu (Piscataway, NJ, Piscataway) walked and Long singled to right. Lou Martini (Flemington, NJ, North Hunterdon) was then hit by a pitch loading the bases. After an out, Philip Scott (Paulsboro, NJ, Paulsboro) drew a walk to force in a run and Nicholas Martins (Linden, NJ, Linden) followed with a sacrifice fly for the 2-0 advantage.

York cut the deficit in half in the top of the second as a balk with the bases loaded allowed Derek Pitzer to score with what turned out to be the only run York would get in the contest.

Montclair State broke the game open in the third with four runs. Christopher Reynolds (Randolph, NJ, Randolph) plated the first run with a sacrifice fly and Perdomo smacked a two-out, two-run double down the left field line for a 5-1 lead. Stolz followed with a base hit to left scoring Perdomo as the Red Hawks built a five-run cushion.

Martini made it a 7-1 game in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Martini and added three in the fifth. Stolz had an RBI on a ground out with Cody Pace (Milltown, NJ, Spotswood) and Long each collecting a run-scoring single increasing the lead 10-1. P.J. Jennings (Morris Plains, NJ, Morristown) delivered the final run in the eighth with an RBI double.

The Red Hawks pounded out a season-best 14 hits.
