Montclair, NJ - Fresh off its first victory of the 2014 season last week, the Red Hawks return home for an NCAA inter-divisional matchup hosting Division II Lincoln University.
Montclair State (1-1) edged Salve Regina last Saturday in Rhode Island as quarterback
Ryan Davies (Lanoka Harbor, NJ, Howell) connected on a 31-yard touchdown toss to wide receiver
Devon Levesque (Hanover, NH, Valley Forge) in the third quarter to put MSU in front. From there the Red Hawk defense kept the Seahawks off the scoreboard coming up with two interceptions in the fourth quarter. The difference in the game turned out to be a blocked extra point from
Kevin Bless (Edgewater, NJ, Paramus Catholic), who collected his second blocked kick in as many weeks. Linebacker
Michael Tenpenny (Iselin, NJ, John F. Kennedy) led the defense with 13 tackles.
Meanwhile Lincoln is also at 1-1 following a 27-0 loss to North Carolina Weslyan at home last week. Running back Stephen Scott finished with 21 carries for 93 rushing yards averaging 4.4 yards per carry. Quarterback Doug Cook completed 6-of-18 pass attempts for 77 yards and Brandon Rowe had four receptions for 41 yards. Defensively, Tyahir Mitchell tied for a game-high nine tackles and led the Lions with four pass breakups. Linebacker Wadel Louis had eight tackles.
It's a rare inter-Division matchup for the Red Hawks, who will be facing a non-Division III team for the first time since 2005 when it met Division I-AA Iona College. Today's game with Lincoln is the first Division II opponent for Montclair State since a 1995 when MSU fell to Southern Connecticut, 15-14 at Sprague Field.
