South Orange, NJ – The Montclair State men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened up their 2015-16 season on Friday with a split against a pair of Division I opponents knocking off Saint Peter's University while falling to Seton Hall University.
The men's team downed the Peacocks 135-89 while the women were victorious versus the Peahens 152-57. MSU fell to the host Pirates 148-103 on the men's side with the women suffering a 153-97 loss.
Senior
SYDNEY STEIN led the MSU women as she finished third in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 11:05.54. She placed second in the 500 freestyle at 5:34.78 with
ASHLEY SINGEWALD coming in third at 6:05.57.
COURTNEY MUNRO was fourth in the 100 backstroke clocking in at 1:08.47 with
MARTHA PENDER taking fourth in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke events with times of 1:17.23 and 2:46.36, respectively.
KIM TORRES placed fourth in the 50 freestyle (27.51 seconds) while
KATHERINE LACAVA (2:24.68) and
SAMANTHA DOWD (57.78) were each fourth in the 200 butterfly and 100 freestyle respectively.
Sophomore
GREG BAUWENS highlighted the men's split of the tri-meet winning both diving events. Bauwens captured the first section of the 1-meter diving with a score of 129.37 points before taking the second section with a score of 197.25 points.
BENJAMIN HERNANDEZ was second in both events.
Freshman
CHARLES COBBERTT had a solid first meet for the Red Hawks with three Top 4 finishes. Cobbertt placed fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:47.14) and was third in the 50 and 100 freestyle events with times of 22.44 and 49.64 seconds, respectively. Classmate
MITCHELL LAYNE finished fourth in the 1000 freestyle posting a time of 10:51.66 and later was second in the 500 freestyle (5:13.89).
JAMES SINGEWALD swam 2:02.09 to place third in the 200 backstroke and was in the same placing for the 100 backstroke (55.66 seconds).
KEVIN CLAUSS was fourth in the 200 breaststroke clocking in at 2:19.86.
The Red Hawks return to action on Friday, October 23 against NJAC preseason favorite The College of New Jersey. First event at the Panzer Athletic Center takes place at 5:00 pm.
