Baseball Comes Up Short Against Heidelberg for Second Time, 9-7

Cordasco Drives in Two Run for Red Hawks

Port Charlotte, FL – The Montclair State baseball team played yet another close game again on Wednesday however the Red Hawks came up short for the fourth time in as many games following a 9-7 loss to Heidelberg University at the Snowbird Classic.

The Red Hawks fell to 0-4 on the season with the four losses coming by a combined five runs. It was also the second loss in three days by MSU against Heidelberg as the Student Princes recorded a 7-6 come-from-behind win on Monday.

Montclair State grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as CHRISTOPHER REYNOLDS singled home RYAN LONG from third base after the latter led off the frame with a base hit. Corey Cordasco followed with an infield hit that plated PHILIP SCOTT and Reynolds came around on a throwing error for a 3-0 lead.

Heidelberg countered with a four-run top of the second to take the lead and added another run in the fourth on an RBI ground out by Alex Grove.  Cordasco would get MSU back within 5-4 in the fifth with a run-scoring double down the left field line.

Heidelberg was able to push the advantage to 7-4 in the seventh as Steven Morse singled home one run and then came around to score on a throwing error. Montclair State answered in its half of the inning. KEITH MURPHY doubled in a run and later came around on a wild pitch bringing MSU within a run for the second time.

However Heidelberg was able to widen its lead scoring twice in the top of the eighth to go up 9-6. Scott made it a 9-7 game in the bottom of the inning with a double but that would be as close as Montclair would get.

Ben Sniezek earned the victory in relief while Derek Hendrixson recorded his second save of the year. Freshman AUSTIN MINTON, making his collegiate debut took the loss. Minton (0-1) allowed eight hits and six runs (five earned) in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out two and walked two.

Montclair recorded 11 hits in the game with Long, HECTOR GONZALEZ, Murphy and Cordasco each getting two.
