Baseball Tripped Up by 16th-Ranked Marietta College in Snowbird Classic, 10-5

Olivera Belts Pinch-Hit Two-Run Homer in 9th

Port Charlotte, FL – 16th-ranked Marietta College used three big scoring innings as the Pioneers upended Montclair State 10-5 at the Snowbird Classic on Thursday morning.

Tommy Crowl pitched seven innings while Ryan Hanahan and Chris Winpigler each drove in two runs for Marietta, which evened its record at 3-3.

IVAN OLIVERA had pinch-hit, two-run home run for the Red Hawks, who fell to 0-5.

Montclair State opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the second. CHRISTOPHER REYNOLDS led off with a walk and KEITH MURPHY followed with a base hit. RICH BURNER sacrificed the runners over with a ground out by Cory Cordsaco scoring Reynolds for the 1-0 lead.

Marietta answered with three runs in the third, including an RBI single by Winpigler that also scored a second run on an MSU error. RYAN LONG's RBI single in the fifth drew the Red Hawks within a run and Montclair tied the game the next inning after ANTHONY ALTIERI singled in Murphy.

The Pioneers would break the game open in the seventh with four runs. Mitch Geers had an RBI double and Winpigler added his second run batted in with a base hit for a 5-3 lead. Pinch-hitter Brandon Paap delivered the big blow with a two-run single making the score 7-3. Marietta tacked on three runs in the ninth. Hanahan tripled home the first two and later scored on a balk.

Olivera's first home run of the season accounted for the final two MSU runs.

Crowl picked up his second win of the season (2-0) as he allowed three runs (one earned) and 10 hits. He struck out four and walked one before Austin Eaton finished up with the final six outs.  MICHAEL MANFRA (0-1) took the loss for MSU as he pitched into the seventh inning. Manfra gave up seven hits and four runs in the 6 2/3 innings, striking out four and walking three.

Winpigler went 3-for-4 at the plate for Marietta while Tim Coy, Tyler Packanik, Chris Petrucci and Michael Barnabei each had two. Long and PHILIP SCOTT had two hits apiece for Montclair State.

Montclair State will attempt to go after that elusive first win of the season on Friday, March 13 taking on Muskingum University at 10:00 am. The Red Hawks will look to avenge a 2-1 loss to the Muskies in their season opener last Sunday.
