Solid Pitching Paces Baseball to Sweep of Oneonta

Red Hawks Take Down Red Dragons, 4-1 & 10-1

Montclair, NJ – Senior lefthander MICHAEL MACCHIA pitched a complete game in the opener while sophomore righty AUSTIN MINTON added six solid innings in the second game as Montclair State swept Oneonta 4-1 and 10-1 at Yogi Berra Stadium on Saturday.

KEVIN ALONSO went 2-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI as the Red Hawks moved over the .500 mark with the victories. MSU is now 7-6.

Macchia (2-0) captured his second decision this season allowing five hits and a run with three strikeouts and a walk. Thomas Bond (1-2) took the loss for the Red Dragons (2-10). RYAN THIEME was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI while PHILIP SCOTT and AARON KANE each drove in a run.

The Red Hawks snapped a scoreless tie in the third. RYAN LONG led off with a single and went to second on a sacrifice before scoring when Scott poked a single through the right side. JOE FOOTE followed with a base hit and after the two each moved up a base on a wild pitch, Thieme doubled both runners home for a 3-0 lead.

Macchia gave up a run in the fourth however Montclair would get the back in the bottom of the sixth. KEITH MURPHY reached on an infield single and went to second on an error. Kane then singled in the infield with Murphy coming around to score as MSU went in front 4-1.

The Red Dragons put two runners on in the seventh but Macchia got a ground ball force out at second to end the game.

In the nightcap, Montclair scored a run in each of the first three innings. Alonso drove a run in during the first with a ground out and a KYLE MISSRY single in the second brought home PETER PENA. Alonso scored on an error in the third making the score 3-0 before Oneonta pushed across a run in the fourth on an error.

Montclair broke open the game with five runs total in the fifth and sixth innings for an 8-1 advantage. Long and Alonso each scored on wild pitches in the fifth with Pena adding an RBI single. Alonso collected an RBI triple the next inning and later scored on an error to cap the scoring.

CONNOR KELLY and JOE FOOTE had RBIs in the eighth to account for the final two Montclair State runs.

Minton (2-1) allowed three hits and an unearned run in six innings before giving way to MICHAEL MATARAZZO who tossed two scoreless innings with three strikeouts. JAY GORMAN closed out the contest with a scoreless ninth inning.

Missry was 3-for-4 with Alonso, Pena and Long each registering two hits.

MSU returns to action on Thursday, March 24 with a 4:00 pm contest in Bethlehem, PA against Moravian College.
