Montclair, NJ - Righthanders
MICHAEL MATARAZZO,
CONNOR LINDSAY and
TAYLOR PARSONS allowed a run and seven hits in the second game as Montclair State recorded a 3-1 victory in the nightcap for a split of its NJAC doubleheader with Rutgers-Newark at Yogi Berra Stadium on Saturday.
JOE FOOTE and
KYLE MISSRY each had an RBI in the second game as the Red Hawks rebounded from a 5-2 loss in the opener. Montclair is now 17-16 overall, 8-6 in the NJAC following the split.
Matarazzo (1-3) picked up his first victory of the year as he allowed six hits and run in six innings, striking out four. Lindsay came on to record the next six outs before Parsons fanned to in the ninth for his fourth save of the season. Dominick Fazio (0-5) took the loss going seven innings giving up only four hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
Montclair scored a pair of runs in the first inning.
RYAN LONG alked and advanced to third on a single by
MATT LONG. Foote followed with a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 Red Hawks lead. Three batters later, Missry singled bringing home
MATT LONG for the 2-0 MSU advantage.
Rutgers-Newark got a run back in the fifth but that was answered in the bottom of the inning as the Red Hawks scratched out a run.
MATT LONG singled with two outs, stole second and went to third on a throwing error before coming home on a wild pitch to make the score 3-1.
The Scarlet Raiders (13-22, 5-9 NJAC) got the tying run to third in the seventh inning with two outs however Lindsay got a comebacker to end that threat. Lindsay then came up with a huge strikeout in the eighth, getting a called third strike with runners at the corners.
In the opener, Mike Zibrin outdueled
AUSTIN MINTON. Zibrin (3-4) went eight innings allowing eight hits and two runs, one earned. He struck out three and walked one before giving way to Vincent Enea who tossed a scoreless ninth for his third save. Minton fell to 3-3 on the season.
KEITH MURPHY gave Montclair a 1-0 lead with an RBI ground out in the fourth however the Raiders scored twice in the fifth getting the go-ahead run on a balk with a runner at third. Rutgers-Newark added two big runs in the eighth inning for a 4-1 lead before getting one more in the ninth after Montclair State plated a run in the eighth inning on an error.
JUSTIN EPIFANIO was 3-for-4 for the Red Hawks with
PHILIP SCOTT getting two hit for MSU.
Montclair returns to action on Tuesday, April 26 with a 4:00 pm non-conference matchup against York College (PA) at Yogi Berra Stadium.
