Montclair, NJ - Longtime rivals renew acquaintances as Montclair State heads out for its final road game on Saturday. The Red Hawks are down in Glassboro, NJ taking on Rowan University at Wackar Stadium.
Both teams will be looking to shake multi-game losing streaks. The Red Hawks have dropped three in a row, all to nationally-ranked teams. The latest last week at home against No. 14 Wesley which scored the final 23 points in a 26-7 win at Sprague Field.
TAJ HUGGINS pulled in a 17-yard pass from
JOHN APICELLA for the lone MSU score in the game. Meanwhile the Profs, who have lost four in a row, were shutout at No. 24 Salisbury, 33-0.
This will be the 57th meeting between the Red Hawks and Profs with MSU holding a 32-24 advantage. Montclair has won eight of the last 11 contests. Montclair State and Rowan began its series in 1949 and played again in 1950 before it was put on hold. The schools renewed their rivalry in 1964 when Rowan (then Glassboro State) reinstated the football program.
Montclair State won that 1964 contest 21-20 en route to an undefeated season. Playing against Montclair that day was a freshman offensive end named Rick Giancola, the same Giancola who now leads the Red Hawks. Giancola, the current winningest active coach in Division III (237) is a member of both school's Hall of Fame.
