Montclair, NJ - Junior righthander
MICHAEL MANFRA tossed six shutout innings while freshman
JOE NORTON drove in two runs as Montclair State topped DeSales, 5-1 for its second straight win on Wednesday afternoon.
The Red Hawks struck early in the first inning when
PHILIP SCOTT brought leadoff man
RYAN LONG home on an RBI groundout in the first inning. MSU would never relinquish the lead, as the Bulldogs combined for just three hits against dominant Red Hawk pitching.
Montclair scored again when two runs came home on a combined fielder's choice and error in the fourth.
JUSTIN EPIFANIO's ground ball resulted in a throwing error, and allowed
RICH BURNER and Norton to score. Scott and
JOE FOOTE came home on Norton's single in the fifth. The lone DeSales run came in the seventh, when Nick White reached on an error and Connor Lafferty came home from third on the play.
Manfra picked up his first win of the year with his six-inning, two-hit, three-walk, two-strikeout effort, and improved to 1-2. Max Maarleveled struck out two in two innings of relief work, and
ANTHONY DEBLASIO finished the game with a perfect frame. Bulldogs starter Corey Hennessey took the loss, and is now 0-1.
The Red Hawks return to action tomorrow at 3:30 at Yogi Berra Stadium against the Lightning of Lehman College.
