Late-Inning Scoring Sends Manhattanville Past Red Hawks, 6-4

MSU Drops Second Straight

Montclair, NJ – Second baseman Peter Iannarilli delivered a two-run triple in the eighth inning as Manhattanville College scored five times in its last two at bats to spoil Montclair State home opener, 6-4 at Yogi Berra Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Jack Matero belted a solo home run for the Valiants, who improved to 4-7 on the season. CHRIS ROTH and NICK MARTINEZ each had two hits and an RBI for the Red Hawks (11-6), who dropped their second straight game.

Montclair jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore third baseman JOE NORTON led off with single and stole second. Following an out, Martinez stroked a double to left field scoring Norton with the game's first run.

Norton would be the catalyst for MSU's next run in the second. He singled to left with two outs and stole second, his 15th of the season and came around to score on Roth's RBI single to center field.

But that would be the last hit for the Red Hawks over the next four innings. Meanwhile, the Valiants got on the board in the fourth as Matero belted a one-out solo homer over the right field fence.
Manhattanville then took the lead in the eighth with four runs. A single and two walks loaded the bases with no one out. Pollack delivered a one-out sacrifice fly tying the game at 2-2.  Iannarilli stepped up and drove a ball deep to right field scoring Scoggins and Conklin as the Valiants took the lead 4-2. Iannarilli accounted for the final run scampering home on a wild pitch.

A two-out error allowed Montclair State to get a run back in its half of the eighth however Manhattanville put one on the board in the ninth on an RBI single by Pollack. The proved to be important as Montclair loaded the bases in the ninth. BRODY LABBE walked with the bases loaded forcing in a run and putting the tying run at second base with two outs. Reliever William Mohr got the next hitter to bounce into a force play to end the game.

Danny Meduri (1-0) for the win in relief pitching two scoreless innings with Mohr earning his first save. Senior righthander AUSTIN MINTON (0-2) took the loss for MSU.
