Box Score 2 Montclair, NJ – Junior leftfielder
NICK MARTINEZ provided the game-winning RBI in both ends of the doubleheader as Montclair State swept Stockton University 7-6 and 5-4 in the NJAC opener for both teams at Yogi Berra Stadium on Saturday.
The Red Hawks (2-0) NJAC improved to 13-6 on the season as they rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth of the opener before taking the second game on a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the seventh inning.
In the first game, Montclair bats were held in check by Osprey starter Ray Hughes, who allowed a run and two hits through the first seven innings along with nine strikeouts. Trailing 3-1 in the eighth, reliever Zach Fillmore issued a one-out walk to Martinez.
IAN LYNCH reached on an error putting runners at first and third. Freshman
ANDREW OLLWERTHER brought them all home with a home run to left field giving the Red Hawks a 4-3 lead.
But Stockton regrouped in the ninth and tied the game as Rico Viani singled to right field scoring Joe Gustites. The Ospreys loaded the bases and then took the lead as JJ Swentkowski was hit by a pitch. Nick D'Arcy followed with a walk as Stockton went up 6-4.
Montclair answered in its half as
HAYDEN REYES drew a one-out walk.
JOE NORTON followed with a base hit and both runners moved up on a wild pitch.
CONNOR KELLY walked to load the bases and the runners moved up a base on a wild pitch with Reyes crossing the plate for a 6-5 Stockton lead. Martinez then lined a single to left field for the tying and winning runs.
The rally made a winner out of senior
MICHAEL MANFRA (4-2), who retired the final batter in the top of the ninth. Lefthander
BRIAN REISS went the first six innings allowing our hits and two runs (one earned) with two strikeouts and three walks. Ryan Moore (0-1) took the loss for Stockton.
Martinez finished 2-for-4.
Stockton took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game as John Perrino scored on a wild pitch. Montclair tied the game in the second as Ollwerther scampered home on a wild pitch and the Red Hawks grabbed a 4-1 advantage in the fourth.
CHRIS ROTH doubled home a run and scored on batter later on Norton's base hit to center.
The Ospreys got within a run in the fifth as Swentkowski had an RBI single and Joe LaCava was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded making the score 4-3. LaCava tied it two innings later on an RBI single to right field.
Montclair State would scratch out the go-ahead run in the seventh without the benefit of a base hit. Norton led off with a walk, went to second on a sacrifice and stole third. Martinez then lifted a fly ball to center field scoring Norton as MSU went back on top 5-4.
NICK COCCHIA set the Ospreys down in order in the eighth before giving way to righthander
ANTHONY DEBLASIO, who allowed a leadoff single before getting three outs, including a double play to end the game.
Cocchia recorded five outs with a pair of strikeouts to improve to 2-0. The save was DeBlasio's first of the season.
