Auburndale, FL – Another day, another well-pitched game and another shutout win for the Montclair State baseball team.
Freshman lefthander
NICK COCCHIA went the first six innings and four relievers closed out the game as the Red Hawks blanked Penn State-Abington, 5-0 in the RussMatt Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore
JOE NORTON had three hits and an RBI for Montclair, which improved to 5-2 on the year with their third straight victory.
Cocchia picked up his first collegiate victory as he allowed three hits in his second career start. The lefty struck out six and walked three.
MICHAEL MATARAZZO recorded a pair of outs in the seventh with
BRIAN REISS fanning the final hitter of the inning.
SEAN LEWANDOSKI struck out the side in the eight before
JUSTIN SILVA finished off the game, fanning two batters in the ninth.
Montclair got the only run it would need in the second inning as
BRODY LABBE lofted a sacrifice fly that scored
KYLE MISSRY.
IAN LYNCH had an RBI single in the third and
AIDAN SUPP brought in a run in the fourth for a 3-0 lead. Norton and
HAYDEN REYES each had RBI singles in the seventh or the final two Red Hawks runs.
Lynch also had three hits and an RBI for Montclair State. Reyes and
CHRIS ROTH were each 2-for-3 with a run scored.
MSU is back in action on Monday, March 5 with a 6:00 pm contest against Rhode Island College.
