Montclair State Drops First Leg of Home-and-Home with Kean, 15-10

Roth, Ollwerther 3 RBI for Red Hawks

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State baseball team got off to a great start however Kean University had the better ending as the Cougars erased a nine-run early deficit for a 15-10 victory at Yogi Berra Stadium on Friday afternoon.

Frank Urso drove in three runs and Matt Krupa went 5-for-5 at the plate as the Cougars (13-15, 4-3 NJAC) captured the first game of the home-and-home series. The two teams meet again at 3:30 pm on Friday, April 13 at Jim Hynes Stadium in Union, NJ.

Freshman designated hitter ANDREW OLLWERTHER and outfielder CHRIS ROTH each drove in three runs for the Red Hawks (16-9, 4-3 NJAC).

After getting the Cougars out in order in the top of the first, Montclair erupted for nine runs and sent 15 batters to the plate. IAN LYNCH drove in the first run and Roth belted a bases-clearing double for a 4-0 lead. JUSTIN BATES had an RBI single and JOE NORTON delivered two more with a single for a 7-0 advantage. Ollwerther capped the inning driving in two with a base hit for the 9-0 lead.

Kean matched that in the top of the second as it saw 14 hitters come to bat. Urso drove in the first run and RBI singles by Steve Santigate and Anthony Laureano got the deficit down to 9-3. Jim
Fitzgerald followed with a two-run single delivered another making the score 9-6. Fitzgerald scampered home on a wild pitch and John Carello's RBI single made it a one-run game. Urso finished off Kean's explosion with a base hit knotting the game at 9-9.

Krupa gave the Cougars the lead in the third with an RBI single and Carello and Frank LoGiudice each drove in a run in the sixth extending the lead to 12-9. LoGiudice single home a run in the eighth and Urso added a sac fly before Laureano made it 15 straight runs for Kean with an RBI single through the right side.

Ollwerther got the final run for the Red Hawks with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth.

Righthander Derek Walker, making his collegiate debut on the mound, got the victory as he got the final out in the first inning and got five more in the third allowing two hits with two walks and a strikeout. Daniel Chiusano cloed out the game for the Kean with 6 1/3 innings of relief allowing five hits and one unearned run. Chiusano fanned three.

MICHAEL MANFRA (4-4) took the loss for MSU.

Norton, NICK MARTINEZ, Ollwerther, Roth and JUSTIN BATES had two hits apiece for the Red Hawks.
