No. 17 TCNJ Posts Sweep of Red Hawks

Montclair Falls to Lions 5-4 & 12-2

Ewing, NJ – The Montclair State baseball suffered a pair of losses on Saturday as the Red Hawks lost twice to 17th-ranked The College of New Jersey at Ackerman Park. MSU (16-12, 4-6 NJAC) fell to the Lions 5-4 and 12-2.

In the first game, TCNJ plated two runs in the fourth to snap a scoreless tie. Austin Lindsay brought home the first run and Patrick Anderson lofted a sacrifice fly giving the hosts a 2-0 lead. The Red Hawks would tie the game in the sixth. JUSTIN EPIFANIO scampered home on a passed ball and JOE NORTON singled through the left side scoring Epifanio for a 2-2 tie.

The Lions regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Thomas Persichetti was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in the go-ahead run and Zachary Shindler followed with an RBI single with a second run scoring on an error for a 5-2 lead.

MSU mounted a rally in the ninth. BRODY LABBE singled with one out putting runners at first and second. A wild pitch advanced the runner a base before JUSTIN BATES singled in Labbe making the score 5-3. HAYDEN REYES followed with an RBI single trimming the lead to a run however Lions' reliever Matt Curry stranded the runners with a fly ball to end the game.

Joe Cirillo (4-1) for the victory going the first eight innings allowing six hits and three runs (two earned) with six strikeouts. Curry recorded his first save. BRIAN REISS (3-1) took the loss for MSU. Norton, Labbe and Bates had two hits apiece for Montclair State.

TCNJ erupted for five runs in the first inning of the second contest and cruised from there. Lindsay drove in the first two with a double while Anderson, Steven Bucci and Ryan Fischer all had RBIs.

The Lions added single runs in the fourth and sixth before putting five more on the board in the seventh. Fischer had the big blow in the inning belting a three-run homer.

Montclair would get on the board in the eighth. ANDREW OLLWERTHER drove in a run with a fielder's choice and KYLE MISSRY walked with the bases loaded.

Brandon Zachary (4-0) earned the win for TCNJ going the first seven innings. CONNOR LINDSAY (4-2) took the loss for the Red Hawks. Epifanio went 2-for-4.

The Red Hawks are back in action on Monday, April 16 with a makeup contest at Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA with first pitch scheduled for 4:00 pm.
