MSU Drops First Game of Home-and-Home with Pioneers

Wayne, NJ – William Paterson's Adam Miller came within one out of a four-hit shutout and the Pioneers scored two early runs as WPU blanked Montclair State 2-0 at Jeff Albies Field on Thursday afternoon.

Designated hitter Carlos Perez drove in both runs as the Pioneers (12-7, 1-2 NJAC) took the first game of the home-and-home series with the local rival. The two teams meet again on Friday, April 6 at Yogi Berra Stadium with first pitch set for 3:30 pm.

WPU scratched out a run in the first inning. Steven DiGirolamo led off with an infield single and went to second base on a deep fly ball to center field. After a walk to Cuevas, Perez smacked a single through the left side for the game's first run.

The Pioneers made it a 2-0 game in the third. Cuevas led off with a single back through the middle, stole second and went to third on a throwing error. Perez lined a ball to right field scoring Cuevas.

The rest was left up to Miller (2-0) who retired 16 of the first 19 batters he faced. Montclair's first threat would come in the sixth as JOE NORTON singled with one out and went to second on a wild pitch. But he would be stranded their as Miller struck out the next two hitters to end the inning.

In the ninth, the Red Hawks' CONNOR KELLY led off with a single before Miller retired the next two hitters. Freshman ANDREW OLLWERTHER worked out a nine-pitch walk putting the tying runs on base. Eric Rosenberg came out of the pen and ended the threat and the game with a line out to third base.

Miller struck out nine and walked three allowing three singles and a double before Rosenberg came in to earn his third save. Carson Weis finished 3-for-3 for the Pioneers with DiGirolamo and Matt Ferrara each recording two hits.

MICHAEL MANFRA (4-3) took the loss for the Red Hawks giving up two runs and seven hits in four innings.
