Solid Relief Efforts, Three-Run 7th Lifts Red Hawks Past Lightning

Montclair, NJ – Sophomore BRODY LABBE and freshman ANDREW OLLWERTHER had two hits and a run batted in each as Montclair State knocked off Lehman College 6-4 at Yogi Berra Stadium on Monday afternoon.

KYLE MISSRY and ROB LOMBARDO each drove in a run as the Red Hawks improved to 16-8 on the year with the win. Carlo Francisco drove in a pair of runs for Lehman, which fell to 10-13. The two teams are scheduled to meet again on Tuesday, April 17 at Yogi Berra Stadium.

The Lightning took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Julius Puryear singled back through the middle scoring Francisco. Montclair tied the game in its half on an RBI single by Labbe. A Francisco grounder brought home Namir Garcia with an error adding a second run as Lehman moved back in front 3-1. MSU answered in its half with two runs of its own Lombardo had an RBI single with a double-play ball scoring another making the score 3-3.

The Red Hawks took the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh with three runs. Labbe singled with one out and went to second on a passed ball. Following an out, he would get to third and scored as Ollwerther tripled to deep centerfield for a 4-3 MSU lead. NICK MARTINEZ followed with a walk and stole second before Missry doubled down the left field line scoring both runners for the three-run advantage.

Lehman cut the lead to 6-4 in the eighth on an RBI ground out by Francisco and the Lightning made things dicey for MSU in the ninth, loading the bases with one out. But reliever MAX MAARLEVELD squashed the threat with a game-ending double-play.

Maareveld earned his first save of the season with senior righthander Mike Matarazzo (2-0) earning the win with 2 1/3 innings of relief. Righthander TYLER HIGGINS pitched three scoreless innings allowing one hit with three strikeouts and two walks.

Manny Velasquez (3-3) took the loss to Lehman.
