Kissimmee, FL – Gordon College designated hitter Chris Leavitt went 2-for-5 and drove in two runs as the Scots got past Montclair State, 4-2 at the RussMatt Invitational on Wednesday afternoon.
Daniel Ensign pitched out of a jam in the eighth and recorded a six-out save as Gordon picked up its first victory of the season (1-9). Freshman
DANIEL CLEMENTE was 3-for-5 for the Red Hawks (3-3), who dropped their second straight and fell back to the .500 mark with the loss.
The Scots took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as John Lagerfeldt lofted a sacrifice fly scoring Daniel Quint. Gordon added to the lead in the third as Quint scored again on a ground ball out by Christian Hodge. Montclair State would halve that lead in the fourth when
NICK MARTINEZ singled through the left side bringing home Clemente making the score, 2-1.
Leavitt pushed the lead back to two runs in the fifth with an RBI single but Montclair answered in its half of the inning.
KYLE FORCINI doubled to left center scoring Dominick Leuizzi getting the Red Hawks back within 3-2.
Leavitt came through again in the seventh with an RBI single putting Gordon in front 4-2. The Red Hawks would threaten in the eighth. Clemente opened the inning with a single and Martinez walked. Ensign came on an uncorked a wild pitch putting the tying run in scoring position with no outs. But Ensign settled down, striking out the next two batters before getting a pop up to end the inning.
MSU would put two runners on in the ninth with two outs however Ensign induced a game-ending ground out.
Freshman righthander
NICHOLAS SEFICK took the loss in his first collegiate start. Sefick went 6 1/3 innings allowing eight hits and four runs (three earned). He struck out four and walked one. Derek Hudson (1-2) got the win for the Scots.
Martinez was 2-for-3.
The Red Hawks are back in action on Thursday, March 14 when it takes on UMass Dartmouth at 10:30 am.
