Newark, NJ – Rutgers-Newark shortstop Dominic Magliaro walked with the bases loaded capping a seven-run eighth inning as the Scarlet Raiders rallied for a 7-3 victory over Montclair State at Weequahic Park on Friday afternoon.
Rutgers-Newark (9-12, 3-5 NJAC) sent 13 batters to the plate in the inning and erased a three-run deficit as it followed up its 6-1 victory from Thursday to complete the sweep of the home-and-home series.
ANDREW OLLWERTHER was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI for the Red Hawks (10-16, 1-7 NJAC), who lost their eighth straight contest.
MSU took its 3-0 lead in the fourth inning.
HAYDEN REYES walked with one out and went to third on a single by
NICK MARTINEZ. Walker followed with single to right scoring Reyes for a 1-0 lead. After a pickoff at first base for the second out, Ollwerther launched a two-run homer, his first of the season.
Meanwhile junior lefthander
BRIAN REISS kept the Raiders in check allowing three hits through the first seven innings until Rutgers-Newark erupted for its seven runs. The Raiders opened the inning with five straight hits, third producing the first run as Luke Magliaro singled up the middle for the first run. John Klimowich singled through the left side making the score 3-2.
Rutgers-Newark loaded the bases and took the lead 4-3 on an error that allowed Luke Magliaro and Klimowich toscore. Michael Streim walked with bases loaded to force home another run and a single by Lisandro Ulerio gave the Raiders a 6-3 advantage. Two batters later, Dominic Magliaro walked for the final run.
Righthander Marcus James closed out the game in the ninth. MSU would load the bases with two outs however James got a ground to end the game.
Anthony Rosoline (3-2) got the victory as he allowed nine hits and three runs with a walk and two strikeouts. Reiss took the loss falling to 2-2.
JOE NORTON was 3-for-5 for the Red Hawks.
Montclair State face Rutgers-Camden in a NJAC twinbill on Saturday, April 13. The Red Hawks and Scarlet Raptors will battle at Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ with first pitch set for 11:30 am.
