Glassboro, NJ – The Montclair State baseball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader with Rutgers-Camden on Saturday. The Red Hawks fell 14-1 in the first game before losing a slugfest in the night cap 14-12.
The losses extended MSU's streak to 10 as Montclair is now 10-18 on the season, 1-9 in NJAC play. Steven Bloyed tossed a complete game in the opener while RJ Concepcion drove in four runs in the second game for the Scarlet Raptors (13-14, 5-5 NJAC).
In the opener, Bloyed squared its record at 2-2 as he struck out 12 while allowing just four hits. Freshman
TYLER DIEFENBACH (2-4) took the loss for Red Hawks.
Rutgers-Camden got all the runs it would need in the bottom of the first. Brett Yurgin scored on a double play before Chris Jones launched a two-run homer for a 3-0 lead. The Raptors busted the game open in the third with 10 runs. Billy Eisler doubled home two runs and Concepcion tripled in two more to highlight the inning. John Guccione capped the inning with a two-run single.
Nolan Gerold accounted for the final run with an RBI single in the sixth. Montclair State's
ANTHONY GUARINO broke up the shutout bid in the eighth inning with a run-scoring single that plated
BRODY LABBE.
Montclair State grabbed a 3-0 lead in the second game.
DONALD GONNELLI drove home a run in the first with
DANIEL CLEMENTE and
JUSTIN BATES each collecting an RBI in the fourth. The Raptors countered with 11 consecutive runs. Rob Scanlan brought home two runs in the sixth to give Rutgers-Camden the lead. Yurgin and Concepcion drove in two runs each in the seventh as the Scarlet Raptors built an 11-3 advantage.
MSU cut that to a run in the eighth inning scoring seven times.
HAYDEN REYES started things off with bases-loaded walk and
BRAD EDWARDS singled making the score 11-5. A misplayed fly ball with two out allowed three more runs to score before an
ANDREW OLLWERTHER two-run double got the Red Hawks within 11-10. Rutgers-Camden anwered that with three runs in the bottom of the inning which proved important at Montclair rallied for two in the ninth.
NICK MARTINEZ brought home a run with a fielder's choice and
KYLE FORCINI singled cutting the lead down to 14-12. Montclair had the bases loaded with one out however reliever Vince Sturtevant induced a game-ending double play for his first save of the season.
Norton and Ollwerther had three hits for MSU while Bates went 2-for-4. Colin Carr (3-0) got the victory as he went the first seven innings.
MIKE CANNAVO (1-2) suffered the loss for the Red Hawks.
Montclair State is back in action on Tuesday, April 19 with a road contest. The Red Hawks will be at Arcadia University for a 3:30 pm matchup with the Knights in Glenside, PA.
