Ferrum, VA – The Montclair State baseball team was topped 14-9 by Ferrum College in non-conference action Saturday afternoon.
The Red Hawks (3-3) look to salvage a series split when they return to the field for the fourth game against the Panthers (8-4).
Ferrum opened the scoring with a three-run third, the big blow coming on a two-run single from Kyle Anstice. The lead grew to 4-0 after three innings before the Red Hawks scratched a run across in the top of the fourth. Junior
ANDREW OLLWERTHER and sophomore
CHRISTOPHER WALKER led off with walks before catcher
JUSTIN BATES loaded the bases on a fielder's choice. Rookie
MILES FEASTER bounced into a fielder's choice to score Ollwerther to put MSU on the board.
The host Panthers plated seven runs over the next two innings, taking advantage of three Red Hawk errors in the fifth. Montclair battled back, scoring twice in the sixth and once in the seventh. In the sixth, rookie
MICHAEL SCHWEYHER hit a one-out single to left before Feaster drew a walk. Senior
HAYDEN REYES singled into center field to load the bases up before classmate
JOE NORTON lined a single into left to plate Feaster and Schweyher. Freshman
SAM ANGELO worked a bases-loaded walk to account for the lone run in that frame.
Walker delivered an RBI single in the eighth, but the Panthers tallied two runs in the home half of the inning to extend the advantage to 14-6 entering the final at-bat. Reyes led off the ninth with a single and was brought all the way home on a double to the gap by Norton.
BRODY LABBE walked before Ollwerther smacked a double to right-center to trim the deficit to 14-9. The next two hitters were retired to prevent Montclair from completing the comeback.
Norton, Walker, Bates, and Reyes all had two hits, while Labbe walked four times. The senior Norton also collected a team-best three RBI's.
BEN LEVINE took the loss, allowing seven runs (three earned) over four innings while striking out two.
