Ferrum, VA – Senior
BRODY LABBE went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, but the Montclair State baseball team was edged by Ferrum College 6-5 Sunday afternoon.
Labbe reached on a one-out single in the top of the first for the Red Hawks (3-4) and promptly stole second. After a strikeout,
ANDREW OLLWERTHER singled into left-center to plate Labbe and give MSU a 1-0 edge. The Panthers (9-4) answered back in the home half of the first on an RBI double to center field. The hosts tacked on a pair runs in both the third and fourth innings to build a 5-1 advantage.
Montclair rallied to pull even at five in the top of the fifth, scoring four times on five hits. Rookie
MILES FEASTER led off with a walk and moved to third on a Labbe double. Feaster would come on a walk before
PETER COSENTINO brought in Labbe on a sacrifice fly. With the bases empty, Ollwerther stepped up and hit his first home run of the year, a solo shot to left.
CHRISTOPHER WALKER singled to keep the inning going, and
MICHAEL SCHWEYHER was hit with a pitch before
HAYDEN REYES tied the game up with single to right-center.
The Red Hawks put two runners on in the sixth, but a double play and caught stealing stopped any rally of occurring. The Panthers regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth, as a run-scoring single brought home a run. Montclair would be unable to battle back, putting just one runner on base over the final three frames.
Reyes, Labbe, Ollwerther, and Feaster had two hits, while
JUSTIN SILVA fanned three in 2.0 innings of work.
The Red Hawks host Yeshiva University on Friday morning at 11 am in their home opener at Yogi Berra Stadium.
