Baseball Rolls Past Yeshiva in Home Opener, 17-3

Ollwerther, Walker Two Hits, Two RBI for Red Hawks

Montclair, NJ – Senior left fielder ANDREW OLLWERTHER and sophomore designated hitter CHRISTOPHER WALKER each had two hits and two RBI as Montclair State rolled past Yeshiva University, 17-3 at Yogi Berra Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

Senior centerfielder BRODY LABBE added a pair of runs batted in as the Red Hawks evened their record at 4-4 in winning their home opener. David Kreisberg had two RBI for the Maccabees (0-1).

Montclair wasted little time getting on the board scoring three times in the bottom of the first. Ollwerther plated the first run with Walker driving in the next with a double up the gap in left-center. He would score on an errant throw to third for the 3-0 lead.

MICHAEL SCHWEYHER sparked a three-run second with an RBI double and later scored on a sac fly by Labbe, who also swiped a pair of bases. An error allowed the final run to come home as Montclair State stretched the lead to 6-0. PETER COSENTINO drove in two runs during a four-run third inning as the lead hit 10-0. After adding a run in the fourth in a wild pitch, the Red Hawks capped the scoring with a six-run sixth. AARON PURYEAR doubled in two runs with Ollwerther and Walker, each contributing RBIs in the frame.

Kreisberg would break up the shutout bid in the seventh with a two-run double. Avi Braun came home on a passed ball to account for the final Yeshiva run.

JUSTIN KOSINSKI (1-0) got the victory as he struck out three. TYLER HIGGINS and Walker each struck out the side in their respective innings of work. Rafi Jacobs (0-1) took the loss for the Maccabees.

Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, March 7, down in Aberdeen, Maryland. The Red Hawks take on St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) at the Ripken Experience with the first pitch set for 3:30 pm. It will be the first of a three-game series over the week for MSU, which faces Cortland in a doubleheader on Sunday, March 8, at noon.
