2020-21 SEASON IN REVIEW

The Red Hawks went 8-2 last season, including a perfect 6-0 during the NJAC regular season. Montclair then went on to top Rutgers-Camden 101-37 in the NJAC Quarterfinals before outlasting Kean 56-52 in the NJAC Semifinals. They were topped by NJCU 64-60 in the NJAC Championship Game, but the team has advanced to the NJAC Championship the last two seasons. TAYLOR BROWN was named the NJAC Player of the Year and was an Honorable Mention All-American choice by the WBCA. Rookie guard KENDALL HODGES, a three-time NJAC Rookie of the Week, was named Honorable Mention All-NJAC after averaging 9.8 points and team-high 34 assists and 17 steals.

KEY RETURNERS

A trio of guards highlight the key returns for this Red Hawk team in 2021-22. Senior guard JULIA SUTTON was second on the club with 11.0 points per game and hit 19 three-pointers, and will be one of the crucial scoring options this season. She scored in double-figures four times last season, including a career-high 27 in the regular-season finale against NJCU. In that game, she helped the Red Hawks erase an 11-point first-quarter deficit and shot 8-of-15 from the floor and 6-of-9 from three. In the NJAC Quarterfinals, Sutton poured in 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting and grabbed four boards as the Red Hawks routed Rutgers-Camden. Hodges started 9-of-10 contests last winter and averaged 15.0 points and 4.5 assists in two regular-season games against the Gothic Knights. In the NJAC Semifinals against Kean, she matched a career-high with 16 points and grabbed a season-best five rebounds as the Red Hawks topped the Cougars. NICKIE CARTER will remain one of the catalysts on the floor, looking to build off a season-high 24 points and six steals in the NJAC Championship. She finished fourth on the team with 8.6 points per game, and her six steals in the championship game marked the highest by a Red Hawk last season. Carter hopes to replicate her freshman year when she was the d3hoops.com Atlantic Region Co-Rookie of the Year and the NJAC Rookie of the Year after leading MSU with 17.0 points per game.

KEY NEWCOMERS

The Red Hawks welcome three newcomers in BRIANNA MONTAJES, OLIVIA VERO, and JULIA DORN, but it's a sophomore that looks to impact this group. MEGAN DUFFY only played in one game last season before missing the rest of the season due to injury. Duffy started in her collegiate debut against Salisbury, tallying eight points and four rebounds in 30 minutes of action. She has the potential to see time at both guard and forward this season, adding flexibility to the Red Hawk offense.

FROM THE COURT

Head Coach Karin Harvey on goals and expectations…
"With returning a more experienced team, we are looking forward to getting on track early in the season and competing for an NJAC Championship. We are especially excited to see our players perform in a new-revamped offense and look to continue to be a dominant defensive team, holding teams to under 55 ppg."
