Aberdeen, MD – Swarthmore College plated runs in each of the first six innings before breaking the game open in the seventh as the Garnet downed Montclair State, 14-5 in the season opener for both teams at the Ripken Experience on Saturday afternoon.
The two were scheduled to play a second contest, however that was canceled due to cold conditions. They will make that game up on Saturday, March 19 at Swarthmore.
Senior designated hitter George Briggs drove in three runs with Emmt Reynolds and Michael Sepe each collecting two RBI. Luke Mutz went 4-for-5 and scored three times.
Sophomore designated hitter
SAM ANGELO went 2-for-4 with a pair of double and two runs scored for MSU (0-1).
Reynolds and Griggs each drove in runs in the first and Swarthmore recorded single runs in each of the next five innings. Matthew Silvestre had an RBI double and Sepe a run-scoring single in the fourth staking Swarthmore to a 5-0 lead.
MSU would get a run back in the fourth as
JASON MOORE lofted a sacrifice fly scoring Angelo. After the Garnet increased the lead to 7-2 in the sixth,
JOE NORTON brought home a second run for the Red Hawks. Swarthmore would bust the game open in the eighth scoring seven times. Briggs doubled home the first two runs.
Montclair tallied twice in the eighth inning.
PETER COSENTINO had an RBI single with
ANDREW OLLWERTHER drawing a bases-loaded walk. Angelo accounted for the final run for MSU in the ninth, scoring on an error after leading off the frame with a double.
Junior righthander Alex Schoessler (1-0) got the victory as he went the first three innings allowing three hits with a strikeout and walk. Junior lefthander
PATRICK CUCCURULLO (0-1) took the loss for the Red Hawks.
Cosentino and Moore had two hits each for MSU.
Montclair State is back at the Ripken Experience on Sunday, February 20 for two games. The Red Hawks are scheduled to face McDaniel College in a doubleheader beginning at Noon.
