Montclair, NJ – Senior forward IRVING CALLENDER IV and senior forward STEVEN BREEMAN were named to the All-Conference Team as the NJAC announced its 2022 award winners on Wednesday.
Callender was selected to the Second Team while Breeman was Honorable Mention. It is the second honor both players, who helped Montclair State to a fourth-place finish and a berth in the NJAC Tournament semifinals.
Callender was second on the team in scoring, averaging 14.6 points per game and a team-best 8.2 rebounds per contest. Callender also led the team with 36 steals and handed out 27 assists while shooting .507 from the field and .703 at the foul line.
The senior led the NJAC in rebounding and was ranked second in field goal percentage, 11th in scoring, 13th in free-throw percentage, and 10th in steals. Callender registered five double-double performances and recorded the third-highest single-game total for steals with seven against Ramapo on January 26. It was the most by a Red Hawk player since 2011. He also posted 10 games of 15 or more points, including five with 20-plus.
Callender opened the year with a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds versus Brooklyn College and played a significant role in MSU's win at Centenary with 22 points and 15 rebounds (fourth-highest single-game total in the NJAC). The Centenary contest would be the start of four consecutive 20-point games for Callender, who had 21 points and 11 rebounds in Montclair's 74-73 victory over Rowan on January 12. Callender hit the decisive free throws with seven seconds remaining.
Breeman currently leads the team in scoring at 15.0 points per game and averaging 6.5 rebounds. The Oak Ridge, NJ native, connected 44 times from three-point range and recorded 42 assists and 22 steals. Breeman shot .470 from the field and hit on 87.3 percent of his free throw attempts, a number that leads the NJAC.
Breeman ranked eighth in the conference in scoring and rebounding and was ninth in three-point field goals per contest. Breeman registered double-double performances twice this season and had a career-best 14 rebounds against William Paterson and New Jersey City on December 8 and February 12, respectively. The 14 rebounds were the fifth-best single-game total in the league in the 2021-22 season.
Breeman scored a season-high 26 points against Kean in November and topped the 20-point mark in games against William Paterson (December 8), Stockton (December 11), and Misericordia (December 20). He recorded 19 points in MSU's win at Rutgers-Newark on January 5 and registered the same total in the Red Hawks' victory at Ramapo. Breeman came up with a clutch performance totaling 18 points with 14 rebounds as MSU knocked off New Jersey City on February 12. He closed out the regular season with 25 points and nine rebounds at Rowan.
