Capital Gains: Red Hawks Sweep Catholic in DC

Red Hawks Extend Win Streak to Five with 19-18, 5-0 Victories

Washington, DC – Sophomore JORDEN JURKIEWICZ homered in both ends of the doubleheader while senior first baseman PETER COSENTINO homered twice and drove in six runs in Game 1 as Montclair State completed a weekend sweep of Catholic University on Sunday.

The Red Hawks (5-1) extended their winning streak to five games out-slugging the hosts 19-18 in the opener. MSU, which won on Saturday, 19-0, recorded its second shutout, taking the nightcap, 5-0.

Catholic jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of the opener as Montclair committed a pair of errors with two outs.  Jurkiewicz cut that in half with a two-run home run in the third and took the lead in the fourth with five runs. RYAN MCKENNA had the big hit, a three-run double making the score 7-4.

The came then turned into a run-scoring fest over the final five innings. The Cardinals tied the game at 8-8 in the fifth inning. Montclair would go back on the top in the sixth on the first of Cosentino's two home runs. MSU tacked on five runs in the seventh as JOE NORTON plated two with a double and McKenna plated a run with a single widening MSU's lead to 15-8.

Catholic came right back with five runs in its half with four runs only to see MSU answer with four in the eighth, including a three-run shot by Cosentino for a 19-12 lead. The Cardinals still did not go away and got within 19-17 after Ben Nardi doubled in two runs. Catholic had the tying runs on base, but reliever NICHOLAS SEFICK got out the jam with an inning-ending double play.

Freshman MATT PONTARI, allowed run in the ninth, but fanned the last two hitters to nail down the save, the first of his career. JACK HAVESON (1-0) was the winner pitcher.
Cosentino was 3-for-6 with McKenna going 3-for-3. MICHAEL MURPHY had two hits.

After a wild scoring contest in the opener, the runs would not be as plentiful however what runs did cross the plate came courtesy of the Red Hawks. Norton led off the game with a walk and got to third on a pair of stolen bases with one out. Cosentino drew a free pass with all three coming home on Jurkiewicz's blast, his fourth of the season.

MSU would add the final two runs in the third inning. RYAN MCKENNA led off with a double and went to third on a balk. The Cardinals (2-4) elected to walk Jurkiewicz who stole second base. Murphy delivered a two-run single for the 5-0 advantage

Those runs would be more than enough for freshman lefthnder JACOB DEMBIN, who earned his first career victory allowing a pair of hits with six strikeouts and a walk.

The Red Hawks are head back to New Jersey for its next set of games. Montclair will face in-state rival Stevens in a three-game series beginning on Friday, March 4 in Hoboken. The two will then play a pair of games on Saturday, March 5 with wrap up the series.
