Baseball Tripped up by Stevens in Doubleheader

Piscataway, NJ – The Montclair State baseball team dropped a pair of games to in-state rival Stevens on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Hawks (6-3) fell 12-6 and 7-3 to Stevens (8-3). The second game was called after seven innings to the darkness.

The Ducks wasted no time, putting five runs in the first inning on just one hit in the opener. After three walks loaded the bases, a wild pitch brought the first run home. A sacrifice fly and a throwing error allowed two more to cross the plate before a two-run single by Evan Pravato capped off the scoring. The two sides traded tallies in the second inning, with Montclair getting their first run across with a run-scoring groundout from REECE MALEK.

Stevens tacked on four more runs in the top half of the third, as Michael Reyes and Ben Tobio had ground-rule doubles that brought runners home. Montclair cut into the deficit after RYAN MCKENNA led off with a walk. McKenna moved up a bag on a groundout and came around on a single to left by JORDEN JURKIEWICZ.

The Ducks added single scores in the fourth and sixth before MSU scored four times in the home half of the sixth. JOE NORTON started the rally by reaching on a fielder's choice with two outs. McKenna tripled down the right-field line before PETER COSENTINO plated him with a double to left. The Red Hawks loaded the bases on a Jurkiewicz single before MICHAEL MURPHY drove in a pair with a single down the left-field line. The Red Hawks would be unable to get any closer, as Stevens allowed just one hit over the final three frames.

Cosentino went 3-for-5 with an RBI, while Murphy went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

The Ducks scored in the first at-bat in the nightcap thanks to an RBI single from Reyes. The Ducks loaded the bases, but rookie MATT PONTARI got a strikeout to end the top of the first. The Red Hawks pulled level in the home half of the frame. Cosentino worked a one-out walk and scampered home on an RBI double down the left-field line by Jurkiewicz. Stevens tacked one run in the top of the second, but the no sides matched zeros on the scoreboard until the sixth.

Stevens staged a two-out rally in the top of the sixth, collecting six consecutive singles to take a 7-1 lead. The Red Hawks rallied in the seventh, beginning with a leadoff walk from pinch-hitter XANDER NABORS. ANTHONY GUARINO singled before JOE NORTON, Cosentino, and Ollwerther walked to bring in two runs. With the tying run at the plate, Ducks reliever Justin Doyle fanned the next two hitters to finish the game.

Guarino went 2-for-3 while Cosentino walked three times in game two. Pontari struck six in four innings work, while BEN LEVINE punched out two in 1 2/3.

The Red Hawks return to the field on Tuesday to face Bridgewater State at 1:30 pm in Myrtle Beach, SC.
