Track & Field Posts Top-10 Marks At NYC Gotham Cup

Staten Island, NY – The Montclair State track and field teams rang in 2023 by competing at the NYC Gotham Cup Friday.
 
The event, held at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex, had no team scores.
 
WOMEN'S RECAP
  • Rookie MICHELLE ITOUA had a 21st place, personal-best time of 8.22 in the 60-meter dash, finishing fifth among Division III competitors. Itoua competed in the 200-meter as well, notching a time of 26.95.
  • Freshman TANIYA GILES had another strong performance, placing second in the shot put. Giles threw 11.99m, missing first by .30m. TARA MASTROIANNI tallied an 18th-place throw of 10.35m in the weight throw.
  • Sophomore SIDNEY WHETSTONE was the highest-placing Division III student-athlete in the long jump, reaching 5.21m. She was a mere .19m out of first.
  • Newcomer BRIANNA RODDY clocked in at 11:37.88 in the 3,000-meter, as Whetstone and ALEXA ALI went back-to-back in the 200. Whetstone clocked in at 28.39, with Ali just a shade behind at 28.4.
MEN'S RECAP
  • JOHN GRIFFITH was once again the top performer on the men's side in the field events, tallying a pair of top-seven finishes. He tossed 15.28m in the shot put, marking the highest score by a Division III performer in the event. The junior hit a personal best of 16m in the weight throw, besting multiple Division I and II student-athletes.
  • KIMANI CARRINGTON qualified for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles, placing seven in 8.59. SAMAEL MILEVOIX clocked in at 50.85 in the 400, as the 4x400 meter relay squad notched a time of 3:31.01.
  • NA'IM KINSEY grabbed 10th in the shot put, hitting 12.87m, with MATTHEW HAILU placing 17th with a throw of 12.12m. Pole vaulter OWEN FOGARTY tied for eighth, leaping 4.3m.
  • MYLES DAY narrowly missed a top-10 mark in the long jump, settling for 12th with a leap of 6.48m, marking a PR. BRYCE FOSTER also notched a PR in the long jump, hitting a mark of 6.12m, while BECK DEENY registered a 12.96m leap in the triple jump to close out top field performances.

"We got some solid performance for the first meet back after the break and saw some PRs and top finishes. We're looking forward to the following meets" – Head Coach Ian Carter.

UP NEXT
The Red Hawks will compete at the Monmouth Winter Collegiate Invitational next Saturday, beginning at 10 am.
