No. 20 Women's Edged By No. 23 Viriginia Wesleyan In Penalty Kicks In NCAA First Round

Box Score Virginia Beach, Va. – The No. 20 Montclair State University women's soccer team fell 2-1 in penalty kicks after a 2-2 draw with No. 23 Virginia Wesleyan University in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Montclair broke through in the 10th minute, with AILEEN CAHILL dishing a pass off to MEAGAN O'CALLAHAN. The graduate student, who was in the center of the box, fired a shot past the keeper for the 1-0 advantage.
  • The lead didn't last long, as the Marlins evened the game 74 seconds later with Sheyenne Diaz converting a pass from Alexis Miller. HALEY MARTIN was pressed into action in the 25th minute, making a pair of saves in close.
  • Montclair nearly took the lead back in the 42nd minute, but EMMI DENOVELLIS rang a shot off the crossbar, and KIMBERLY CAMPBELL's rebound was saved.
  • The Marlins snapped the 1-1 deadlock in the 55th minute as Alexis Miller rocketed a free-kick that Martin could not stop, only getting a finger-tip on the try. Montclair answered back in the 62nd minute, as Cahill converted from the edge of the box into the near side of the goal.
  • Cahill had a golden chance to push Montclair in front in the 74th, but the Marlins cleared the ball off the line before it crossed over. As the game went into overtime, Martin made a denial with 18 seconds remaining to keep the score level.
  • Neither side broke through in the second extra session, meaning penalties were needed to decide the outcome. Montclair missed the first kick before Miller gave VWU a 1-0 advantage. The two sides missed the next seven, but Campbell hit to tie it at one. Needing one to win, Adrianna Gunter converted the game-winner, sending VWU into the second round.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • KYLIE PRENDERGAST led Montclair with five shots, with O'Callahan adding four.
  • Martin made a season-high seven saves in the setback.
FROM THE FIELD
"A great effort, great battle, everything that's good about Division III college soccer. I loved how we started the game and to be able to fight back and tie it up. Our kids were amazing. That's a real good team. You can tell why they went to the Final Four last year. And I thought that the game came down to literally an inch here and there and today was not the day for us, but it's not because of how our kids played. They were excellent all year. You got." – Head Coach Pat Naughter.
