Track & Field Teams Take Fifth At NJAC Indoor Championships

Montclair, NJ – Junior JOHN GRIFFITH won the shot put and took third in the weight throw to highlight top performers at the 2023 New Jersey Athletic Conference Indoor Championships Monday.
 
The men's side placed fifth with 55.50 points, as the women's side also took fifth with 28 tallies.
 
MEN'S RECAP
  • The lone winner of the day for Montclair State, Griffith saved his best throw in the shot put for last. After exceeding 15.31m on his previous five throws, the junior heaved 16.59m, topping second place by nearly two meters. The mark surpassed the NJAC high of the year, which Griffith held, but the 16.59m mark catapulted him to sixth nationally.
  • Griffith placed third in the weight throw, hitting 15.54m on his second toss of the night. He missed second place by .41m. Na'Im Kinsey also hit a big PR in the shot put, recording a fifth-place throw of 14.45m.
  • KIMANI CARRINGTON qualified for the finals in the 60-hurdles, recording a preliminary time of 8.48. The sophomore placed third overall as he notched a finals time of 8.48. The Red Hawks also received five points from SAMAEL MILEVOIX in the 400, as the sophomore registered a fourth-place time of 50.13.
  • BRANDON BALCACER punched his ticket to the AARTFC Indoor Regional Championships next month with his 11th place mark of 7.13 in the 60-meter, as all three relay teams netted points. The 4x200 and 4x400 took fourth, with the distance medley relay quarter taking sixth.
  • BECK DEENY took fourth in the triple jump, setting a PR of 13.00m as MYLES DAY (6.38m) and ANTHONY HOLMES (6.33m) recorded top-eight marks in the long jump.
WOMEN'S RECAP
  • Montclair State tallied a pair of second-place finishes in the field events. Rookie TANIYA GILES continued her impressive indoor season, taking second in the shot put. After hitting 11.97 on her first throw, Giles reached 12.38m on her third attempt.
  • SIDNEY WHETSTONE took second place in the long jump, hitting a distance of 5.16m. She was clipped by Eliza Bruncaj of TCNJ, who won the event in 5.28m.
  • MIA PEGUERO took seventh in the triple jump (9.84m) and registered a personal best in the long jump with a leap of 4.7m. JULIE MURPHY placed 11th in the mile (6:06.69), with BRIANNA RODDY taking ninth in the 3,000-meters (11:24.5).
  • The 4x200 team of MICHELLE ITOUA, ALEXA ALI, JEALYNE RAMOS, and Whetstone was third in 1:49.28, and the DMR team of Murphy, KAYLA MCADAMS, ANGIE GONZALEZ, and CAITLIN WITTERS was fifth in 15:05.71.
