Pontari Leads No. 23 Baseball To Split With F&M

Montclair, NJ – Sophomore MATT PONTARI tossed 5 1/3 hitless innings as the No. 23 Montclair State baseball team split a twin-bill with Franklin & Marshall Friday.

The Red Hawks (9-2) fell 12-2 in the opener before rebounding with an 8-2 triumph in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless 2 1/3 frames in the opener, the Red Hawks broke through with the first run in the bottom of the third. REECE MALEK singled to lead off the frame and moved to third on a stolen base and throwing error. After a MATT KALISKE walk, Kaslike went to steal second. On the throw-down, Malek broke for home and slid in safely.
  • The Diplomats took the lead for good in the fourth, scoring twice. They would score three times in the seventh to take a 5-1 lead before Malek chipped away at the deficit with an RBI single to left.
  • F&M capped off the scoring with four runs in the eighth and three in the ninth to close the victory.
  • Pontari started hot, striking out the side in the first on just 10 pitches. The Red Hawks scored four runs in the first, with MILES FEASTER driving in RYAN MCKENNA three batters into the game. JASON MOORE smacked a bases-clearing double two batters later to make it 4-0.
  • Feaster came up with two men on in the second and launched a 1-2 offering over the left-field wall for his first career home run.
  • Pontari was excellent and did not allow a batter to reach base until a one-out single in the sixth. The Diplomats cut into the lead with two runs in the seventh before Montclair polished off the game with an unearned tally in the eighth.
